RFID Required on kids!?
 

A judge in Texas ruled that the kids in his district have to wear RFID technology locator chips while on campus. For use only for locating students on campus, it obviously brings up certain rights issues as well as the burdening subject of the RFID chip that people conspire about.

Any thoughts on this? We had a discussion on this that led to some name calling in the " http://www.snowboardingforum.com/pol...-debunked.html " thread because the subject of the RFID chip was brought up :thumbsup:. What are your thoughts/takes on this subject. How would you feel if this was applied to your child, or yourself?

Doesn't seem like a big deal. RFID is not the same as GPS. There is an RFID chip in your passport too. All it'll do is tell them if you walked through a doorway...or rather if your ID card did. If they were surgically implanting them, that'd be another story. How is that different from a security guard with a notepad writing down what classes you go to?

No duh RFID isn't the same as GPS...if it was GPS there'd be no issue. GPS would be pointless for a school. Utilizing RFID is an issue however. This tech can do things from monitor your heart beats, to give out your name, via transmitting radio waves. If you feel comfortable having your child wear technology with such capabilities...to each his own I suppose, but that is a massive difference than a human with pen and paper.

if i lived in that area and couldn't move for some odd reason, I would definitely be home schooling my kids.

RFID is really no different from a security card. In fact, most security cards these days USE rfid. And no, it can't read your heartbeat. It can transmit your medical stats if you have SOME OTHER electronics implanted in you which is connected to an RFID transmitter.

The problem with this story is there's no information on WHY the judge made the ruling, or even what the ruling actually was. Based on what I see here, it could be that the university wants students to carry ID badges or ID cards when on campus, and it might be to track their use of resources or it might be to only let authorized people into the pool. Or it might admittedly be for some truly moronic reason. :dunno:

Yeah...there are different forms that RFID can take from pacemakers to security cards so I am speaking a bit out of context by generalizing them together. I guess my main worry here is that these ones in particular give them the ability to give them constant monitoring ability of yourself. I also worry about how easily this can be abused :dunno:

Tyler, you are fundamentally misunderstanding the capability of RFID. The range of a non active tag is at best 2 meters. That means all they can really track is whether or not you walked through a doorway.
