Well as many of you know I am a senior at FAU, it infuriates me how universities take advantage of students. My university claim that Barnes and Nobles is the one responsible for the prices of the Books. I know new books have a set price but the used books should not cost 85% of the original cost of the book. Well I found out that FAU is getting a cut of each book sold in the university, ofcourse the university denies that.
Just to give you gist of this, this summer semester I took 9 credits, for 3 course I needed 6 books total. These books at the library cost $570 USED (the tuition was like $1000), on half.com they cost me $250 shipped to the house. In addition to that when you try to sell the book back to them, they offer you about 15% of the price of the book. Universities should try to aid students, I mean this is a state university, I understand that a private one would pulling this stunt, but a public one come on... |

Had the same experience when I went to University here in Canada, except that I wasn't smart enough until 2nd year to look for alternatives instead of the campus bookstore. Sadly I sold all my previous years books that I didn't think I'd need for the cut rate price you mentioned, and it all went to beer. I do feel thankful that University isn't as crazy expensive as the States, by BA cost me a whole $17,000. And that was Canadian dollars back in the day, so like $19.99 US.
And who says you can't drink your education? |

^^^^ If you assists a State University its not that expensive about $130 a credit so I guess around $15,600. But if you got private forget about it, my cousin pays like $3900 a semester thats fucking nuts, thank God daddy is rich.
-----------------Edit------------------- Ohh I forgot, in addition to having really $$$ books they change editions every year. I bet there so many people getting kick backs from this, while our book become worthless every year. Last edited by Simply^Ride; 05-18-2008 at 11:11 PM. |

That is what pisses me off, but the thing is that some professors will purposely use the added sections on some test to fuck you over. Notice I say "some", there are others that will try to aid the students the most they can. But this sometimes will get them in trouble, schools have so much bureaucratic crap built into them, specially when using government money.

the main piss take at my uni, was the number of courses where the chief lecturer ensured that HIS books were primary sources, ie mandatory items on the reading list.
i guess as a supplement to their lectures, it makes sense; but is this really the broad an all encompassing education one might expect as part of a degree? and then one lecturer in particular.... conspired to make an IT course up, where one item of course work, was to type up perfectly, (line breaks and all,) a few pages from one of his titles. ie. he got the student population to create by hand, an electronic version of his book! however with regard to the cost of books.... i did not buy a single copy of a single book throughout my entire undergraduate studies. our library rocked! it was fully stocked, had a more than adequate reservation policy and was a perfect environment to hit the books (especially when compared to home, with rizla, playstation and friends proving destracting!) not one book bought! RAH!

Not even one book!!!! thats incredible I must of bought over 50 books already, oh well it's not going to change. Some of the professors make a priority to buy the books. As long as I am not wasting all this money in the University bookstore I am ok with it.
