I own/operate a late model sportbike (rice rockets) motorcycle salvage yard. In conjunction with this, I do performance suspension work for roadracing applications.

So suspension tuner and the motorcycle junk man!

Now, if anyone could kindly tell me how to get this stupid 848 running, I'd be thankful

hey, slight hijack here - but i just put a tank on my sportster with an 'aircraft' style fuel cap and the fucker pretty much spews gas.... i was thinking about getting a ?salvaged? crotch rocket tank and cutting the entire fuel cap/vent assembly out and welding it onto this tank. do you think that would work? would it solve the problem? how much should i expect to pay for a tank that i could cut that piece out of?

I have a 07 R6 tank that you can have. The cap area is fine. I would then buy a spin on SSR fuel cap which are around $50. You could use a OEM gas cap, but typically the locks are sold as a set. I have an 09 R6 ignition and gas cap for around $100. If you are a good welder, it should fix your problem...keep in mind the R6 tank is vented in the cap so you may have to run a vent line down through the tank and out the bottom.

dude, you're the man - i'm gonna have a guy who is a good welder/welds gas tanks all the time do it so i know it gets done right.... i'm gonna go talk to him about it tomorrow and if i need that tank from you i'll get at you in a pm.

got a link to the ssr cap you're talking about?

the whole thing is kinda driving me nuts... i don't understand why its even leaking in the first place.. the tank i had on before didn't have a vent out of anywhere besides the cap and it never leaked.... and its like this one is leaking just from the vapors pushing up out...

Pfft. It's EASY to tell if the gas tank welding is done right. Because if it's NOT, there's a large explosion followed by a rain of metal and body parts.

with the gas that was dribbling down the tank as i sat ontop of a running 200* 1200cc engine i'm thinking it could happen sooner than later

SSR cap: Slingshot Racing : Yamaha CNC Racing Gas Cap - $49.99

I did a 1 hr 10 minute stint on our endurance road racing motorcycle (05 GSXR1k at the time) with the gas cap not latched....we were running in the top 3 so I didn't want to stop so I just suffered. Yeah...it burned in all the wrong places

I'm not very familiar with Harley but is it leaking out of the gas cap? If so, the sealing surface is not even or the rubber part in contact with the sealing surface is damaged. I would inspect those areas. You could try a gas resistant RTV to see if that provides a temporary fix. If it works, the trouble is in the mating of the sealing surfaces.

All gas tanks need to be vented because temperature changes increase or decrease pressure in the tank. Also, you can vapor lock a tank as you pump fuel out. It could be that your tank vent is clogged and the tank needs to relieve pressure so it pushed fuel out the cap.

Good luck

Pretty sure you're supposed to take the gas out first Donutz...
