OK I hate to be mean because I feel bad for this kid, but this is how the rest of us learn I guess :/ The next town over from where I work, this 17 year old football player tried snowboarding at his HOUSE over a snowbank and landed in the street on his head. Well.... (1) where was his helmet? (2) WHY would you snowboard anywhere but a mountain? (3) this is also how you screw up your board against pavement... again I feel bad cuz he's paralyzed, but it's too bad it happened this way.

Not sure how much a helmet would have helped if it's a spinal injury, but on general principles you'd think a football player would understand the concept of a helmet.
I'd like more details, but honestly this looks like the type of things teenagers do all the time, because they're A) invulnerable and B) immortal. Really, I'm surprised I survived to see my 20th birthday.

They don't give TOO much info in the article, but they do say it was a snow day and it happened on his street as he went off a snowbank... they also showed the area on the news and it looks like a very SLIGHT hill, like way flatter then a bunny hill, so he probably went down this slightly slanted lawn and over a snowbank made from the plows and probably tried to flip and landed upside down in the street. that's my guess

Riding in the City and using urban features is really popular these days. Many kids decide not to use a helmet. The professial urban riders don't seem to wear them in the videos. Not clear if a helmet would have helped anyhow. What I do know is that this is terrible and I do feel horrible for the kid. He will have somebody picking shit out of his ass for the rest of his life and that, my dear, is horrifying. So setting up a donation site is just fine in my books.
If he is paralized, I hope he gets some inspiration and the will to live from that snowboarder in Nelson who is a quad and better than 95% of snowboarders on this forum, including myself.

I'm with Donutz on this one. I feel bad for him and his family but this is the stupid stuff we all did a teenagers. Some of us are luckier than others. Hell I ran dirt bikes into trees more than once without a helmet.

I don't think you should delete. We know what you're saying.
It's a bad thing to happen but mainly sounds like bad luck and we should be glad that we managed to survive our teens. We've all done stupid things and this is the kind of thing that could have happened just sledging, poor kid was unlucky. |

I donno why I got so harsh about it. I think it's cuz I thought of my nephews doing something like that (cuz I immediately sent it to my 14 yr old snowboarder nephew) and it's upsetting to see that happen. Also PMS? I AM a woman after all lol. Anywho, the more i keep hearing about it the worse I feel. I also heard some more news about it last night on tv... he was a snowboard instructor at Nashoba Valley in Westford, MA. They showed videos of him at Nashoba hitting the jumps and he flew high! They don't have a video of when the accident happened thankfully, these were just random footages they had to show how great of a snowboarder he was. I couldn't believe it. Foot in my mouth. I thought he was some noob where he was outside his house doing tricks. I'm surprised he didn't go to the mountain on his day off of school, unless he was planning to later on. Him and a few friends had made a jump at home and that's where he fell. Someone was asking for more details, so that's all I've got so far. |
