a site i worked on saw someone get run over by a spliff toking forklift driver; squish.

site closed for a day; health and safety executive came in; checked the situation; called the coppers. dead dude had flowers and a pittance paid to his widow and orphan; the driver is doing time for negligent manslaughter.

consequences to stoopid actions for sure and so higher vigilence is needed; but a positive drugs test doesn't equate to being incapable at work; not with trace elements lasting in the body for weeks to months.

as said, trust is pivotal to morale. if i can't trust you, why the hell have i hired you?

Well, given the amount of time employees waste online these days, it's not surprising that employers are starting to block this stuff. Of course there are going to be people that can multi-task and still get everything done while likening their genitals to throwing hotdogs down hall, but I would bet it hampers the performance of some people. Its caused some issues, especially if you frequent a forum that actually helps you in your job, I know with some companies blocking facebook and myspace have had to remove a block because people have created groups to discuss issues relevent to their respective careers.

And I agree that drug testing at jobs where there are no safety issues etc., is pretty useless. I could only imagine if they adminstered breathalyzers, I've worked with people that would blow over after every lunch break. Good thing computers can't kill you.

true, and even the most trustable people can slip up from time to time. but it is pretty discouraging to the people who really do have problems with drugs. i wouldn't force drug tests on people if it were my choice, but after working for a company that does test i've noticed that it isn't a big deal for people who don't have drug problems (and many of these people do use from time to time), and can be for those that do. they only test you here when you first get a job or if you do something that makes them really think that drugs were involved.

i didnt get drugtested for my job though.

it just sucks that i dont have internet. im not one of the people that abuse it, but i just go on from time to time for a short break. im actually the most productive person in my whole team aside from my boss
