Anyone ever been approached by guys trying to sell home theater systems outta their truck/SUV? Basically, they say these speakers are worth in the thousands, like $2-3 grand and they even got brochures to show you. But then they say story like my boss gave me too many and I want to sell them in a hurry before he finds out.
Happened to me twice, and then looked it up on the internet and found out it's an old scam. Called White Van Speaker Scam. First time was at a gas station in Riverside, where this young guy asked me "I know this sounds strange, but do you want some free speakers" to entice me to come look, then asks that they need $100-200 beer money and I should give them some for the hook up. He showed me the $2-3 grand MSRP on the box. I offered them $20 and they turned it down. Second time was also at another gas station in Oceanside. Same high pressure guy trying to hook me up and this time he had a brochure. After I turned him down, he starts asking other people around if they want to buy speakers. It was kind of sad watching him with his bro like attitude and hyping these speakers up. Well, both of them tried to pull that friend that's trying to hook you up appeal. And show you that $2000-3000 MSRP on the box and say they're in a hurry to sell cheap and will take $500. I think that's an insane amount to spend at a gas station on moments notice. I just wonder if the suckers they bait really believe these are thousand dollar speakers. |

Majority of the time the are shitty speakers but have a name brand company on em. I know someone that fell for this scam. There are ways to find out, Google .

I'm shocked that this still happens. I remember being approached at a gas station with this pitch like 15yrs ago.

But both times they looked like a bunch of dumb bros that couldn't pass high school. Bunch of knuckle heads that think they're so cool trying to get people to pay $100+ for something they don't know works. |

Been going on forever. Some people fall for it too.
$5 speakers. One audio mag (might have been Stereo Magazine) bought them for the hell of it to test. They were obviously, shit. Another time a buddy of mine bought some (not a close buddy obviously). I didn't have the heart to tell him he now looked like a lollypop to me (Sucker!) |
