Just got myself an android phone, it my first smartphone and I want to get some apps installed.
Of course I want to measure my speed and am interested in other snowboard related stuff, but looking for apps in general. Any advice on useful apps (I am not interested in games)? |

If your up for rooting it, you can get ad blocking to remove the ads from free apps, as well as enabling all of the prime functions of some good anti virus programs which will allow you to lock/track/or wipe out all info on it if ever lost via texts from a trusted friends phone.

Depends on what Android you are running, but if you search google, there should be some automated programs with instructions on how to use them. Essentially Android is based of Linux, but lacks superuser rights from the factory, rooting allows you superuser rights and gives certain programs the permissions they need such as Adblock plus. Without the superuser rights they run with limited function, or almost no fucntion at all. Also Avast Anti Virus will allow you the remote track/lock/wipe fucntions.

Trekbuddy is the app I used to use on my Nokia (it's a java app that will work one pretty much any phone except an Apple), what it does is records GPS tracklogs that you can upload to Garmin Connect. It won't give you realtime data while you're boarding, but it'll give you much better data once you get home and upload the tracklog...

Omg I love the Android ecosystem. Sooo much better than Apple's. Gratz on the new phone!
Ski tracks is available for Andriod and it works very well. Its similar to Alpine Replay. On The Snow (like the website) is a good apo to have. You can get all your trail maps there but be warned, not all of them have heen updated this season. I got a good app called Gaia which is awesome for backcountry and cross country...like google maps for topos. It was $10 retail but i got it when it was Amazon.com free app of the day. As far as other non snowboarding apps...the ones I cant live without are: Feedly (my news reader and slightly more robust than the better looking Pulse.) JustInk and Postagram - I send people tons of post cards from wierd places. Springpad for notes/organization (some ppl prefer Evernote or Catch notes but I feel they are a bit too feature heavy.) And PixlrExpress. Its from the makers of autoCAD and blows Instagram out of the water. Enjoy the new phone. Its amazing how much smartphones can do nowadays. Oh just a note..not every android app works with all android phones. You should be ok with these on any phone though

Keep an eye out for an app called diygps. I think it's only for the iPhone so find something similar for android. It's a backcountry GPS app that doesn't need to be in cellphone range.
I didn't want games at first too but they are good for train rides. I'm hooked on ruzzle right now |
