Wife bought me a Retina 15" MBP, it's real nice but I wouldn't say it's such a big difference.

Win 8, aside from individual issues (which is why some people like Macs) I heard, from a very respected source (sets up networks and systems for lawyers across the US) is Windows 7 with a better control panel.

If you miss the start button you can add it back on. Did that for my 10 y/o nephew and he hasn't complained since.

Looks like a Vista repeat...

Granted, I have Vista on this laptop, but it was after they fixed everything.

I just recently "acquired" and installed 7 Ultimate on my gaming computer (couldn't play Bioshock Infinite with XP) and I've been super happy so far. Might even use the disk to upgrade my Vista laptop to 7.

I thought windows 8 was developed for their tablet and touch screens specifically(?)

I've used it on family's computer and hated it. If I ever buy a new laptop I'll be torrenting 7 and replacing.

Yeah. Talked to a friend that works at Rane and he says they are not and will not support it. Use 7 or wait till the next Microsoft os comes out. And traditionally every other os sucks and 8 is the worst of them

The interface is what I read people complaining about. With Vista it was real buggy and un stable. I've not had one issue with windows 8 crashing or running buggy.

Boots fast, file system is faster, power management is better, and some other behind the scenes improvements.

If you can get past the interface issues and have a newer machine with enough resources to run the OS as intended its not that bad IMO.

Windows 8 is freezing on me multiple times a day. Maybe it's my Sony. But it's my 3rd Vaio. I never had these problems on my others.

Ubuntu looks tempting. I may try it out on an old machine.
