Helmet question

I am a newbie and have gone out twice, both times in lessons and then some on my own time. I realize I do need a helmet. Do you wear a hat under a helmet? What is the most protective yet one that is simple and relatively inexpensive? I have no clue...am not ready to purchase a board yet but need a helmet. Thanks in advance.

Do not wear a hat under your helmet, it compromises the protection. Snow sport specific helmets will be warm enough anyway. Find one that fits your head well, that's what's going to give you the best protection.

All snowsports helmets basically meet the same standards. Look out for the standard two (forgot what they are - CE and ASTE or something along those lines). Beyond that it is mostly just looks and comfort/fit.

The only additional protective features worth looking out for in a helmet are probably MIPS and multi-impact foam.

Go to a shop (with goggles if you have them) and try on a few helmets. My first helmet was a large and my current (different brand) is a small. No hat under the helmet. I've ridden in single digits and my head has never felt cold with either of my helmets.

You don't wear a hat, but lots of people wear a balaclava under them. Most of them that are made for winter sports will have a thin head piece that fits well under the helmet and a fuzzier neck/face warmer portion. Any shop where you get a helmet will have them. As for helmets, I would strongly suggest trying them on and not ordering online the first time. Everyone's head and every helmet is shaped different.

Not true. Otherwise reps and brands wouldnt be able to advertise beanie compatibility. There are brands that even build helmets with specific feature sets to accommodate goggle straps under the helmet.

You are not completely wrong and he isn't completely right. I've seen helmets where they warn you not to wear a beanie underneath because it could compromise the protection and I also seen helmets that are designed to be used with beanies.

Ok so I'm heading to Niseko in 4 weeks and am undecided also about the helmet issue.
I have the Smith Maze. Im not a huge fan of the beanie underneath, and at the same time I'm not a huge fan of the ear warmers on the helmet.
With the warmers on its hard to hear.

I was thinking as i have a ninja suit. If i pull the hood over and with my neck warmer will that be enough for the ears?

I wear a beanie under my helmet if it's cold enough. Considering I keep my hair under an inch long I doubt it has a real effect on safety.
