686 Pants

I just picked up a pair of 686 pants. These things look nice but are a little too advanced for my liking. So they consist of an insulated liner, gaiter, and the outer shell, in this order. Given the gaiters have a metal hook, I understand they go over the boot (although oddly I have never done it this way - always went inside the boot). What should I do with the insulated liner? It has plastic buttons so stuffing it inside the boot might be painful.. Anyone?

The only thing inside the boots are the socks. Everything else goes over. The hook is make to attach to the laces.
