edge tool

may seem like a stupid question; On most edge file tools (including both of mine) it shows a 88 degree and 90 degree setting, the question I have is will you get the 88 degree bevel if you place the file on the same side as the #88 or do you place the file on the opposite side so that the #88 is facing you ? I think I explained it so you can understand what I'm asking.

I was going to place a square against to see, but figured I'd ask before I tried it

The edge tools only work for the side edge so the you place the 88 on the same side with the 90 facing you.

I believe the degree is for the side it is labelled. Do you by chance still have the instructions that came with it?

I usually find myself second guessing which way it goes so put it against a square edge tool. Then just before I start I have to try to remember if I flipped it and its facing the right way or not, so use the square edge again to make sure. Then when I'm done I've somehow convinced myself I did something wrong and triple check again.

Then I try to remember if I actually did shampoo my hair when I was in the shower. Getting old sucks.

Those tools usually have an arrow either on the tool itsself or on the file. The number that is facing the edge is the angle you're sharpening at, just follow the direction of the arrow. If you're doing the side edge then the 88* will be facing your base.

piskit; thanks for posting the pix, makes it a hell of a lot easier to explain. I think we're on the same page, so the way it's shown it the photo with the 90 degrees facing upward indicates that the edge is being filed at 88 degrees ?

Thanks again, heading up tomorrow expecting 7-13" new, don't really needs edges for that but I hit a rock last week.
