but should I be looking for a shell instead of insulated? Its 80g insulated and it has ventilation but I dont really know if thats alot or a little. Im want to spend under $200 and obviously the cheaper the better, but I want something that is good for me and the conditions I ride in
Even if you do most of your riding in socal, I wouldn't buy outerwear with less than 10K ratings like the first one you posted. You may hit other spots around the country or get caught in a little weather. Also, both of those jackets only have critically taped seams.
That said, one of my most used jacket is only 8K rated and has critically taped seams and is great for most socal conditions, but if this is going to be your only jacket, you may want to look at something with some better specs just to give it a wider range of use.
assuming you ride primarily at Bear, Summit and Mt. High, I'd suggest you go with a shell and layer underneath. 80g insulation is pretty heavy, and i know it can get super warm at all the resorts in socal. a 40-45 degree day, like is pretty common at bear, would be killer while wearing something with 80g insulation, i think.
