Snowboarded a few times...starting to go on blues and need protection

So I've snowboarded a few times now and can link turns and such. I can do greens without falling at all and I fall about every other time I go down blues. The issue is that falling on blues really hurts and I smacked my head on the packed snow when I caught the edge of my snowboard.

So I need to invest in a helmet. What helmet should I get? I've been looking around and thinking that $50 is around my budget.

On a site note my friend who is also starting to snowboard needs snowpants, so what are some good entry level snowpants?

We are both college students and are running on college budgets. We snowboard in the South PA area doing the college deals which is like $30 for lift and rental for 4 hours.

Thanks a lot in advance all

If you are broke, then the cheapest helmet you can get is a bicycle or skateboard helmet from Target or Wal-mart for $20-$40. Most ski helmets will run at least $70+.

Snow pants will be a bit trickier. If you are only mostly hard packed or icy snow then you can probably get away with el-cheapo ski pants for ~$20-$30 a pair (minimal, if any waterproofing).

If you plan to ride any powdery snow, then you'd better get something waterproof, which will run you at least $50. Hunt around on gearscan.com or other discount sites for deals on shells.
