It shouldn't be turning off if it gets too cold. The cold will negatively impact battery life though. Throw it on airplane mode to make it last longer.

I have a dumbphone, so I use an Ipod Nano. I keep mine in my breast pocket and never have battery issues, but then again I don't ride in below freezing temps on a regular basis (doesn't mean I haven't though).
