Base-layers; broken down

Ok I need some baselayer 101. I need to get new first layer stuff that's warm and lightweight for carry and traveling purposes. I honestly don't know where to start, material wise. I understand you get what you pay for so just throw it all out there! I just bought a new Marmot flatspin jacket and I'm hoping it's warm and lightweight, works like down but no where near as "puffy". I'm all ears....

Icebreaker merino wool is great stuff, comes in various weights. I have a range of it and mix and max for the weather.

+1 on the icebreakers.

Anything with a natural fibre is generally good but Merino Wool is probably the best. Synthetic base layers will work ok but they tend to get pretty stinky.
