Breckenridge, Colorado Legalizes Pot
Way to go! It`s about time we as a nation get over this stupid anti pot stigma. It is so hypocritical for alchohol to be "socially acceptable" but weed is still considered "evil" I hope this paves the way for more cities and states to do likewise. I also commend President Obama for telling the Justice Department to back off on this too!

Colorado ski town legalizes pot
(AP) – 7 hours ago
DENVER — The Colorado ski town of Breckenridge has voted overwhelmingly to legalize marijuana.
Early returns Tuesday night showed the proposal winning with 72 percent of the vote. The measure would allow adults over 21 to have up to 1 ounce of marijuana.
The measure is largely symbolic because pot possession remains a state crime for people without medical clearance. But supporters said they wanted to send a message to local law enforcement to stop busting small-time pot smokers.
The vote comes as communities nationwide are struggling with how to enforce pot laws at a time when medical marijuana has surged in popularity.

Obama eases policy on medical marijuana

WASHINGTON — Pot-smoking patients or their sanctioned suppliers should not be targeted for federal prosecution in states that allow medical marijuana, prosecutors were told Monday in a new policy memo issued by the Justice Department.
Under the policy spelled out in a three-page legal memo, federal prosecutors are being told it is not a good use of their time to arrest people who use or provide medical marijuana in strict compliance with state law.
The guidelines issued by the department do, however, make it clear that federal agents will go after people whose marijuana distribution goes beyond what is permitted under state law or use medical marijuana as a cover for other crimes.
The memo advises prosecutors they "should not focus federal resources in your states on individuals whose actions are in clear and unambiguous compliance with existing state laws providing for the medical use of marijuana."
The new policy is a significant departure from the Bush administration, which insisted it would continue to enforce federal anti-pot laws regardless of state codes.

It's been legal in Denver for awhile now. The guys backing this reform tried to go state wide last year, but I think they were a little over zealous. Starting in cities and small municipalities is the way to start the wave. I saw that Breck was voting for this and figured it would be a no brainer. A bunch of ski and snowboard bums voting to legalize pot? And this result is a surprise? Really?

Pot is less harmful than booze and cigarettes.
Legalize it, commercialize it, and tax it. Concentrate enforement on hard drugs.
I don't drink, smoke or do pot, and even I don't see the point of it being illegal.

Yeah, I saw that. Very awesome in theory, but we'll see how it does in practice.
For example, Denver voted to decriminalize pot and place it at the very bottom of the police department's list of priorities. However, citizens continued to get busted and the police say that despite the vote, they are still bound to uphold state and federal law. We'll see how chill their police chief is because that's what it's going to count on.
