No question that is hard, no matter what your belief system is. It is the hardest thing anyone can attempt to do. Period.

I know you said you were not selling religion. But, I think the above comment did come across as from someone who works the retail department.
The problem I have with (some) believers, and (some) atheists alike, is when one group feels they have a monopoly on Truth. This usually lends itself to said-group acting as if they are on ethical high-ground. From there, they seek to convert/impose/proselytize/condemn/etc anyone who has a different view. To use extremes as example, you have people and groups like Al Qaeda, Fred Phelps, and Micheal Moore*.
*Politically, I actually agree with most all of Moore's positions. However, I have serious issues with some of his tactics and approaches to making his points and/or "converting" people.

Classic case of the message being good, but the delivery sucking big time...
I will say that I like how he toned it down in Sicko...I think that is by far his best work.

PC on high
On a powder day we are all blessed. Reveling in natures finest element. Water, straight from the heavens and in it's pristine form. It glitters in all it's glory, a blanket of white. We bath in it, rejoicing in the highest.

and so if you believe there is no god, you fall from the fence of agnosticism, which by definition refuses to be convinced by all current arguements for or against the existence of a deity.
but that's just me.

You can choose to not accept it, but I go so far as to call it nonsense. The two terms are not mutually exclusive, imo. It is possible to acknowledge our limitations and know that there is no proof for or against a deity, making someone an agnostic, and still have a believe for, or against, a deity, making that same person an atheist or theist.
Agnostic: a person who holds that the existence of the ultimate cause, as God, and the essential nature of things are unknown and unknowable, or that human knowledge is limited to experience.
Atheist: a person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings.
This is a GREAT video, which explains it better than I could ever hope to. The entire video is awesome, but the part about agnosticism and atheism starts at 2:35.
YouTube - Response to: "Atheists have faith, just like theists."
I hope this video doesn't step on any toes. I don't really want to get into the middle of who's beliefs are right and who's are wrong. I just want to show that it is possible to be an agnostic atheist.

what has faith got to do with anything, other than it being used as a reasonable alternative to not being provided with evidence?
if a god exists, then it wouldn't need faith from its followers to continue existing. it would just be.

Second, by now, every possible (and decent) argument has been made for/against the existence of a God. Nothing better is going to come down the line with the next IKEA catalouge.
|
are you suggesting that a god would be swedish (and flat packed)?
this point hints on the purpose of agnosticism. you say every possible arguement has been made..... well clearly the one pivotal arguement, the definitive one HAS NOT.
for why? the limitations of the human mind! cue agnosticism.

Hence, agnostics are too "wishy-washy" to have "faith" in either possibility. And there is no way more conclusive evidence is ever going to be arrived at, IMHO.
|
you think atheists require faith? surely they are the epitome of being faithless no? ie I see no god, therefore there is no god.
