^^^No, not dead babies, from human embryos. The controversy is because you have to "destroy" the embryo, and some people feel that is destroying a human life. However, there is promising research being done using adult stem cells to recreate embryonic like stem cells. In which case, no embryo is being destroyed and therefore, no controversy.

The biggest controversy is that most people get their info about stem cell research from the Christopher Reeve episode of South Park. You don't crack open a baby and just drink from it's neck. And because of that, they go of an emotional decision, rather than looking at facts and statistics. Some say it's immoral to destroy an embryo... others say it's immoral NOT to do this research when it could improve the quality of many other lives. Who's right? Apparently God is always right, even to those of us that don't believe. And God hates science... because science keeps proving God to be non-existent the more we research.

i think the most retarded aspect of that whole policy was that it blocked all funding for stem cell research. it has been proven, while bush was prez, that stem cells could be used from the umbilical cord thus sparing the embryonic aspect of the research. how the hell is it immoral to use umbilical cords for stem cells? and now adult skin cells can be used as stem cells. imagine where this technology would be if buush hadnt hindered it.

So where do we draw the line? Is it just fertilized cells that are considered people? I've heard people are against jerking off because you kill sperm which are POTENTIALLY people. I just don't get it. There are plenty of people on the planet already. I think we need to consider quality of life over quantity. People out there who are paralyzed could potentially walk again. People with crippling disorders could live a decent life. I seriously do not understand people who oppose stem cell research.

I saw an anti stem cell campaign where some people brought these little kids who were supposed to be used for stem cell research when they were embryos, but they were "spared" and someone gave birth to them instead. That seems a little bit exaggerated to me. Embryos are not conscious beings. They have no brain or higher function of any kind.

Anyways, I'm all for stem cell research. The only thing I oppose is the use of tax dollars to create embryos specifically for research. I think there are plenty available that we don't need to drain tax payers even more. The government needs to swing a little bit of the cost. Maybe we could save a few bucks by not blowing up Iraqis for a day or two.
