Default Panicdemic!!

I can't help but to believe that all the media attention being thrown at this panicdemic is just for show. Something to distract us from everything else going on.

I'm just not buying the "zomfboobie stage 5 fluzorz pandemicz!!!lol!1one!!" It just reeks like some really lame ad campaign. Some half assed attempt at taking our minds off the economy.

The media dumped everything they had and slapped their panic buttons like an epileptic monkey with turretsí and an affinity for red buttons in an attempt to sway the elections (not that Iím really going to complain about the result). Then after using it as a chance to push through MUCH needed infrastructure improvements throughout the US (along with a recockulous amount of useless spending), the current administration decided maybe it was time to tone it down a tad.

We've all seen them come out saying "Hey it's NOT as bad as we thought it would be, it looks like it's improving etc etc" with no effect on the general public's opinion on the economy or the media's rabid econo-bashing. So is this it? Is this what we've chosen to get the entire world's mind off of the economy? A handful of people who may or may not have died from a new strain of the flu? More people die in car accidents every day than this thing. Where's the vehicledemic?! 99% of the people in the US with this strain are recovering on their own with NO MEDICATION. Why in the blue blazing fuck are we running around like a bunch of fairies? It's gotten to the point where countries have stopped importing meat. IT'S A VIRUS FOR FUCK'S SAKE! IT DOESN'T LIVE IN OR ON FROZEN MEAT! It's not a bacteria and you're not going to get it from eating a badly cooked pork chop.

I'm almost to the point of not caring anymore. Pandemic? ok sure whatever. Which new government regulation are you going to cook up for this one? Quit trying to scare me into supporting new regulations or new government bumbling. present it like a normal society and if it's not an utter cock show of stupidity, I'll support it. And I'm not just blaming our current "government". The whole planet is using this as their handy dandy distraction.

I swear to the Holy Spaghetti Monster I'm going to take over a large land mass and form my own country if this shit keeps up.

I don't see what valid point you're complaining about, just a long ramble telling us your panties are all bunched up at the media for keeping you up to date.

You make no sense. The media is just doing their jobs, reporting on current events. Of coure they're going to sensationalize everything, it's how they get ratings. You act like the media 'chose' to start a pandemic to keep everyone's mind off the economy.

It's their job to report on what's going on. And right now a pandemic is going on. They're also reporting on Obama's 100 days, North Korea's latest temper tantrum, Al-Qaeda's 'Kill Americans' message of the week, a filibuster proof majority in congress, and Somali pirates.

Don't buy it. Great. You'll show the world you're not going to fall for all this superstitious nonsense about 'viruses' that you can't even see. Afterall the flu is caused by a small gnome living in your stomach, isn't it? Your head's buried so far up your ass that anyone would need a shoehorn, vaseline, and a stethoscope just to talk to you about this topic.

It IS a big deal, brainchild. Ever heard of morbidity? Unproductive AND racking up healthcare costs. Wonder what the economic toll of 25% of a country's workforce being out of work for two weeks would be? No, of course you haven't, because you don't know jack or shit about epidemiology.

It meets the definitive criteria for a 'pandemic.' Don't blame the media because people are too dumb to know they can't get it from eating pork. It's HIGHLY contagious, transmittable before symptoms appear, and it's just getting warmed up.

Ever heard of homologous recombination? No, of course you haven't. If it infects someone who is already infected with the right flu virus, you could get a rather deadly, highly transmittable new virus strain. The odds of it are mathemtically small. But when you consider 6 billion people on this planet who could become infected, each carrying billions of virus particles, a funny thing happens - the odds aren't so small.

i fear munky has been licking swine.

and mooz is just jealous that he and his bovine spongiform encephalopathy chums are no longer in the lime-light.

meanwhile, 5 people in the UK have a slight sniffle and people in london are wearing face masks on the street. is 'the demon media' blowing things out of proportion just so they might sustain something other than reports of redundancy and rich bankers getting away 'with it' scott free? well duh!

i suppose we could blame the news media for exploiting human kind's paranoia and anxieties surrounding self preservation..... or we could just laugh at those too stoopid to stay in school or to adopt a rational perspective.

I like the NYC Mayor Bloomberg's response. Fuggehaboutit. Go on with your life. If you're feeling sick stay home, you can afford to miss a few days of pay.

Unfortunately, a lot of people here if they don't have sick time can't afford to miss a few days of pay so they'll go to work anyway. Coughing, hacking, and sneezing on the their hands, then touching the poles on the buses and trains. That's even if they cover their mouths when they do. I hate to say they're a ton of rude people here, but it's amazing that in this day and age people just don't give a f&*k. I was walking down the street when a woman of ukrainian decent and accent( azzkrackastan I suspect) decided that she'd cough in my face as we crossed paths. I kinda screamed at her the she should cover her mouth and got a why from her. I can't put my response to her on here cause then I'd sound like a typical New Yorker. Too bad they don't put shite like that in the news "Nasty Woman Spreads Plauge."

Bloomberg's response isn't unique or insightful, it's what you're supposed to do - stay home, don't panic.

An individual can afford to miss a few days. Then you get the idiots who make a job out of spreading the virus, next thing you know it's spreading everywhere.

An entire country can afford to have a giant fraction of its population out of work for a few days, but it's a giant price tag. Morbidity - that's the point folks are missing. Nobody's saying it's going to be the next black death.

I agree with him totally about staying home. I've done a ton of research in college and for work on viral, biological, and parasitic infections, their vectors and rates of infection. Besides mosquitos or ticks, the biggest spreader is man.

I really need to stop reading things like the Stand, playing Resident Evil, or watching Outbreak or 28 Days Later.

If we're needlessly comparing dick sizes on the net, I can send you my doctoral thesis on the molecular biology of arboviruses and their vectors. It's a slim 248 pages.

It's the ease with which this is transmitted person to person that makes this thing such a problem.

At any rate, underreaction is more harmful than overreaction. If we don't act as if this thing is spreading like wildfire, then it will be too late to do anything about it should it indeed turn out to be spreading that fast. Then the very same critics who are mocking people washing hands, wearing masks, the travel restrictions, and quarantines will instead be complaining about the lack of government response. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

If nothing, and absolutely nothing else comes of this, we will have learned a SHITLOAD about epidemiology of aerosol viruses in modern society and what works and what doesn't (like making vaccines to this thing which will have run its course before the first vaccines hit the market) work in the case of rapid response and containment for WHEN (not if) the actual black death-like virus does hit. It's a gold mine of data and mistakes to learn from.

Some people just have no respect for cold, hard science, unless zombies are somehow involved.
