N.Korea = Obama's Cuban Missle Crisis?

In the wake of its recent nuclear detonation and missle tests, North Korea has renounced the 1953 truce with South Korea, technically returning the two countries to an active state of war. Is it just so much posturing as Kim Jong Il plans for his successor? Or are we in for a remake of 13 Days in September?

Posturing. N Korea is economically in ruin, and Kim Jong Il is trying to show the Korean people and rest of the world it's still a power to be fear.

In a side note, Alan Alda is being asked to head up M*A*S*H The Second Korean War just in case.

No. Mainly because N. Korea isn't getting nukes because Russia thinks the US president is a pussy, as was the case in the Cuban Missile Crisis.

North Korea is a sad farce of a country. Their neighbors should just roll in, depose Kim Jong Il and give the whole mess to South Korea.

Jong Il is one of the sort of people (it seems) who at the end of his life, is more inclined to take many people into the 'afterlife' with him.

i would hope america stays the fuck out of this, and entrusts the regional super power of russia and / or china to resolve this issue.

NK would get battered by south korea. fact is, the south koreans aren't really phased by any of this. the 'peace' between the two nations is now what it has always been. SK with its close western allies is armed to the bollocks. NK with its self serving dictator and long term impoverisation would never stand a chance in a fighting war between the two koreas.

i would to see one of two things happen; local pressure nips this in the bud or a coup within NK would put an end to this silliness. either way, it is nothing for the US or the EU or the UN to get stressed about. to give it attention, is to give Jong Il the attention he craves but comes no where near to deserving. fuck him.

I think out of all you wrote the best response was the simplest.

I heard they're going through some kind of regime change. Like the military is trying to kick the Kim family to the gutter after the old man croaks. So this is his way throwing a little fit. Regardless, if N.Korea decides to bomb or invade someone, game over, we'll turn that shit-hole into a parking lot. That's all that counts.

so here you identify the problem; the current man in charge is a nutter. and then you suggest a solution....

of course i might have misunderstood your meaning, but would this not incur the deaths of very many innocent people?

I think it's sabre rattling. N. Korea is always doing it. Besides, their flaccid little arsenal isn't enough to threaten anyone except S. Korea.

The strategy is called brinkmanship. They are trying to push this whole thing as far as they possibly can. The problem for them is Japan. Japan has already threatened to deploy AEGIS ships to their shores. I don't think they'll try anything, personally.

Always the case with war and understanding the same would apply for NK initiating an attack. But if you had an excuse to invade and take down the military regime then you could reunite the country and be done with it. I'm sure the North Koreans would love to have a hot meal and some shoes to wear.

has japan rewritten their constitution to allow a fighting force beyond their 'domestic defence force' yet?

two certain A bombs compelled the japanese people to indulge completely in a pascifistic culture
