Did anyone happen to read the standards or just the DB reporter's article? Since everyone has read the article, before you go to the standards, read the last part of the article. There's all ready too much.
Plus, if someone wants to teach about some of these things, they can still be aligned to the standards. Is Hippidy Hop a cultural revolution? No, but if you want to talk about it, it can be extended from the Civil Rights movement or the Harlem Renaissance.......both in the Standards. Should someone be asking students to "explain how institutional racism is evident in America" in a Soc class? No, but the topic can surely garner some coverage when discussing leaders in the Civil Rights movement such as one time SNCC leader Stokely Carmichael. Are the Standards Bastardized? Yup. Can deviations be made? Yup. Is the state 70 Percent white? Supposedly. Is there anything with addressing the 2nd amendment when in some parts of Texas guns are used to kill people and in other parts of Texas guns are used to kill dinner? Nope Look at your state standards.....you might be surprised at what is or isn't being taught. State Standards are a disaster everywhere, but especially in the Social Studies. Looking at the Standards in Wisconsin, studying anything would amount to studying history. The only specifics that are given include NATO, the IMF, the UN, the Fed, and NAFTA. Or the 5 major world religions. So, all you really need to know how the U.S. screws its people and its allies or various interpretations of right and wrong. Good God did I just defend Texas?

Texas is the largest text book purchaser, therefore the majority of the textbooks published meet their standards, which the rest of the country is forced to buy. More info on the standards, or more like lack thereof: Texas BOE Removes Jefferson From History Standard : Dispatches from the Culture Wars Just because it's popular doesn't mean it's not fucking retarded. I bet eating your own shit is popular among crazy people with diapers too. |

"As much as I agree with the sentiment, I can tell you that as a teacher, we don't need to overreact to these. Honestly, teachers will cover the material in the standards but if a teacher actually sticks to ONLY the standards in my opinion he is not doing his job. Again - I agree with your sentiment. Texas is having BIG BIG issues. Just don't underestimate teachers "As I stated before, teachers will have a final say on what gets supplemented in the curriculum. The textbook that I currently use says nothing about Kings "Letter From a Birmingham Jail" (eventhough it was specified on the 1998 version of the TEKS standards), but my kids still learn about his stance on Just and Unjust Laws because I make them read and analyze the damn thing. I am sure that the textbook companies are quite aware of the political ramblings going on in Texas. It is a big state, but there are other states that are also looking for their standards to be met. I'm going to walk out on a limb here and bet....I will never snowboard again......that Thomas Jefferson will remain in history books despite Texas removing him from their standards document. You know what......Ol' Hobbes, his Leviathan, Rousseau and the Enlightenment that he regretfully promoted will probably survive the Texas redline, too. I will say, though, I must really be ill because I am engaging in an internet forum debate on a Friday night with someone who drove his point home with the following quote. "I bet eating your own shit is popular among crazy people with diapers too." I'm going to go hit the Nyquil and see if maybe that quote makes better sense to me.
