Default WE Speak english here

Well adding to the melting pot of debates, a governor elect in alabama shot a video about how we speak english here and people, hinting towards immigrants need to learn it. In reality i sort of agree with it. You don't move to France and expect everyone to speak english to you because that is the only language you know. What is super funny is that the drivers license test really is available in 12 different languages. Sure you passed the test in Chinese but guess what all the road signs are in? ENGLISH!!!

We speak english add by the governor elect

Lovin that southern twang. But in reality it does make sense to me. How much money it will actually save is the big question however

I want to share one of my favorite quotes on this subject, it's by President Teddy Roosevelt.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

IMHO, it couldn't have been spoken any better.

I don't mind people speaking other languages. What I do mind is immigrants not even attempting to learn English. I am also equally tired of having to press 1 for English no matter what fucking business I call. It's rather annoying. Where's the button for Korean? Chinese? Don't even begin to use the excuse that there are more Spanish speakers or else I'll point you to the faulty immigration laws here.

The fact is, foreigners are perfectly comfortable not learning English. We have cities dedicated a specific race. They all work in places with other people of the same race. That wouldn't be such a huge deal if we didn't encourage it outside of the work place as well. Why learn English when you can press 2 for your language or flip the box on the other side for a Spanish translation?

There is a problem with this issue though. It might very well lead to more people telling a group of ethnic people to speak English in public. I've already had that done to me on multiple occasions as it is. It is highly rude and I've lost my temper due to it many times. I have no problem with having the government emphasizing the need to learn English, but I do have a problem with people expecting us ethnic Americans to always speak English.

Tony, do you want big government or not? Do you want a police state interfering with peoples' lives or not? Are you on a platform of principle or is it a 'Stay out of our lives as long as it benefits me.' platform you stand on?

There is no official state religion in the U.S.
In the same spirit, there is no official state language in the U.S.

To legislate otherwise is unconstitutional.

I have and do. America is the only place where you need to press a button to get the native language. Aside from signs and such, there is no English translation on cereal boxes in foreign countries. Some global brands obviously do though like Hersheys.

I don't think America needs to legislate against foreign languages. They should just stop wasting time and money on translating everything just like in those foreign countries you are telling me to travel to

I think it's nonsense.

America is a nation of diversity and to try to overcome that by assimilating cultures is a terrible thing. If anything, perhaps we Americans should be more willing to learn other languages and try to dispose of our tired old ethnocentric ways.

And in all fairness, the only major language aside from English spoken by our neighboring countries is Spanish. Would it be so hard for us to learn it?
