And Canadians joke about the litigious tendencies of Americans.

One of the last lines were it says something to the effect "the father hopes the insurance company will help out if they lose" is just precious...

To be honest, half the shit at the end sounds like bullshit. Failure to teach a kid the dangers of lighters? Hiring a babysitter that's not properly trained (please forgive me if there literally is an organization you have to be certified to babysit...)?

It's obviously just an attempt by the insurance company to get out of paying the damages by tossing it on someone else. She didn't react properly? She fucking saved both kids AND the dog even!

I'm not going to debate anything about laws here, but I am going to point out the stupidity.

1. Your kid is attracted to fire.
2. Father leaves lighter available.
3. Your 5 year old knows how to work a lighter that apparently isn't the childproof kind.
4. Parents hire a babysitter without checking qualifications.
5. Parents hire 11 year old babysitter.

and they wondered why their house burned down WHY?

Nothing is childproof, trust me, you obviously don't have kids.

Dunno about the laws in that area but here in Oregon even a sibling has to be 12 or older to babysit or the authorities can get involved.

You're right I don't have kids but if I did I sure as hell wouldn't hire an 11 year old to watch over and take care of them. Nor would I hire someone to watch my child, alone in my house without checking multiple references. The lawsuit says that she "acted as a babysitter without proper training"...yet they hired her.

Not trying to argue with anyone here, but the parents are idiots. Would I be mad if my house burned down, of course, but I'd also show a little bit more gratitude when someone saves your childs life. Good luck getting a babysitter after this lawsuit

It's a shame how sue happy people are...

Insure EVERYTHING (which is why our rates are so high)

And sue ANYONE (even when your stupid ass hired an 11 y/o)

I'm curious if someone can even hire an 11 y/o for work. Not sure how old someone has to be in order to get paid for work in America. Never really checked to see if an age limit exists. I know I wasn't able to work until 14 when I was coming up. And I've been working ever since...

I believe they dropped the lawsuit now.

and an 11 year-old babysitter is the least likely to bring a jackass boyfriend over to drink all your booze
