Good find. I often wonder what the states would be like if it scaled back the military and spent the money internally instead of overseas.

I think his last question was right on the money.

McNally: Finally, if you could look back from from a decade in the future – It’s 2020, did the US turn things around in this regard? And if your answer is no, what were some of the consequences; if your answer is yes, how did we do it?

Bacevich: My guess is that we will not have turned it around. The only way that we will is if the American people become truly cognizant of the negative effects of persisting in the Washington Rules. Effectively the volunteer army means that most of us don’t really share in the service and sacrifice of perpetual war. The fact that wars are funded through deficit spending means that we don’t even feel them in our pocket book. If there is some further economic calamity, or -- and I obviously don’t want this to happen -- if there is some further 9/11 style calamity, perhaps that would jolt Americans into a recognition that something is fundamentally amiss and something needs to change. My guess, however, is that it’s not all that likely.

I think the fall of America is almost inevitable, which is sad given all the work good men put into creating it. We're the new world's Roman Empire. A megalomaniacal nation of fat, gluttonous warmongers with soldiers all over the world. We're economically unstable and morally questionable, run by madmen and greedy aristocrats who base their decisions on the whims of big businesses and banks rather than on sound political principles. I don't see much about America that works anymore.

Of course, humans are nothing if we are not adaptable. We can change, but will we before it's too late? I dunno. What am I? Nostradamus?

I'd be ok with just splitting along the mason-dixon line again. no big loss there.

Very well said

The whole "For the people, by the people" thing is deader then the guys who wrote it. The average working man in this country doesn't matter one bit anymore. If you are not one of the sheep the go through the left gate or the right gate, you are even less important. I for one am completely fed up with American politics, does it even matter anymore which band of crooked liars are in the majority? They all tell the masses what they want to hear, then turn around and advance the agendas of the power brokers that ponied up the cash to get them elected.

We pretend to believe in democracy, and try to force it down the throats of the rest of the world. It's no different then the crusades that advanced Christianity, do it our way or die. The only exception to this is countries and regions that don't have anything we want. Our society has become so fast paced and complex that it's hard to see the big picture. Do we really invade other countries to further the cause of democracy? Or give a rats ass about atrocities committed to certain groups? Hell no we don't, we only want what they have, and we will milk it for all it's worth then move on like a band of vultures.
