Default Is it me or do...

...people use free speech to do and say whatever they want regardless of who it hurts? i'm pretty sure the founding fathers didnt have this in mind when they created the constitution.

Supreme Court weighs extent of free speech rights at funerals -

Its a bit like the right to bear arms.

Offence and whether it is felt, is down to the individual; both by whoever tries to be offensive and whoever gets bent out of shape by whatever is said.

It was interesting to me to see the question, 'is islam a thin skinned religion?'; ie are they hyper-sensitive? well its not really for non-muslims to say, just as the n-bomb can't really be completely examined by caucasians.

I think ultimately one needs to appreciate that the concept of 'freedom' is a myth. We are burdened by the expectaion of reasonable societal behaviour, the world over. A problem only arises when a population are told they are free(tm), in direct contradiction to the legislation that coerces them! It can be a bitter pill for the naive to swallow.
Just coz you don't understand it
Doesn't mean it makes no sense!

Your right to swing your fist ends where my face begins.

Who said that? Someone famous anyway.

And it sums it up nicely. Your freedom of X is not unlimited or unbounded. It ends where it starts to do me more harm than the good it does you. That's why freedom of speech is limited by libel laws, for instance.

And your freedoms don't protect you from the legal consequences of engaging in them. Yelling "FIRE" in a crowded theatre will get you at minimum a mischief charge, possibly a criminal negligence charge, not to mention possibly sued. Claiming a "freedom of speech" defence won't do it.

Try strapping a six-gun to your hip and walking around downtown Seattle. Feel that pressure? That's ten cops dogpiling you. So much for "right to bear arms".

People who think their "rights" are a license to do whateverthehell they want without limit or consequence simply haven't a clue.

Heh. Bad choice for an example. But the specific location doesn't matter. If there's *anywhere* in the states where they have, through law, limited your right to bear arms then that serves as an example that the right is not unlimited.
