Infographic showing contradictions in the Bible

Came across this, thought it deserved a repost

The Bible was wrong. For evidence look to, well, the Bible.

Such is the conclusion of this stunning, provocative infographic, which maps contradictions in the Bible, from whether thou shalt not commit adultery down to the color of Jesus’s robes. Career skeptic Sam Harris commissioned the chart for his nonprofit foundation Project Reason, with graphic design by Madrid-based Andy Marlow. Whatever your religious views, it’s an incredible testament to the power of data visualization. It’s managed to make an ancient text -- over which men have fought wars and women have sacrificed babies -- look downright silly.

The organization here is pretty simple. You’ve got bars at the bottom representing the 1,189 verses of the King James Bible. White’s for the Old Testament, gray’s for the New Testament. Then a red arc links all the verses that contradict each other.

Steve Wells, the guy who compiled the data, cites 439 -- 439! -- questions the Bible equivocates on, often in several places. Even something as seemingly incontrovertible as how old Abram was when Ishmael was born has more than one answer (see Genesis 11:26; Genesis 11:32; Genesis 16:16; and Acts 7:2-4). For the full key, download the chart as a PDF.

So to anyone who thinks the Bible’s the last word on anything, remember this: It isn’t even the last word on itself.

You can get a giant PDF of the entire chart here.

Really interesting stuff, regardless of your take on Christianity.

Did she say Strap-in or Strap-on?

And before anyone gets all whatever about this being an attack on Christianity, it isn't. Although coming from Sam Harris, I guess it's easy to assume that. The point to remember is that literal belief in the infallibility of the bible (fundamentalism) is a minority attitude even in the US, however much they may loudly want you to believe otherwise. And it's beyond minority practically into non-existant everywhere else. Most of the arguments against the christian religion are only a problem for you if you are a fundamentalist. And if you're a fundamentalist, the problem's been getting worse and worse since Galileo.

Coffee is your friend. Everyone else is an acquaintance.

the bible isn't merely "a book" . not in the sense that it is one book. It is a series of scriptures written by many different people. also, different things were excluded and added to the books at different times through history. I think the people who want to accept the bible as the full direct word directly from god himself are complete fools. Politics throughout the ages altered the bible in very significant ways. Rulers of nations and popes inserted changes to suit their short term political needs at the time. I think with the bible, you should get the basic message of the word, not focus on every damn sentence and word. that, and almost completely forget about the old testament.
