16 Ways to Cut the Deficit - Room for Debate - NYTimes.com
Definitely liberal slant ways to make up the deficit. But most of it seems reasonable to me. |

1. end the empire. close all foreign military bases . Including massive ones in Germany, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia (the real reason the terrorists hate us). bring the boys home
2. let the bush tax cuts expire. return tax rates to those of the clinton era when we had a budget surplus before the retarded cowboy came to town and pretty much ruined everything 3. don't fuck with social security. It ain't going broke. that's a complete right wing myth It's solvent for at least the next 75 years. 4. eliminate tax loopholes and audit offshore banking in the cayman islands and elsewhere. those things would goa long way |

2. Might work but the US has never been able to get more than 20% of GDP in tax revenue. People will probably just make less. Clinton never really ran a surplus. Clinton and others just took the social security money and put it in the general fund and called it a surplus. Now the social security "trust fund" is full of IOU's no actual money. 3. Social security is going broke. The "trust fund" is full of IOU's from the treasury only. For the social security trust fund to get money for those IOU's from the treasury, the treasury is going to have to borrow the money from somewhere. Medicare is the real problem though. Like this: YouTube - Dumb & Dumber -- Empty Suitcase of Money 4. May help a little. |

If we retracted our war-tentacles back home, we could save so much money and still be vastly protected. We of course aren't occupying other countries for legit reasons, so that's going to be hard to do, (special interests and corporations, especially oil wouldn't let it happen).

I forgot to add the one thing I would change about social security. And it's really a simple no brainer idea that is probably way too sensible to ever pass congress. but put a income cap on social security. SS is about providing working class elderly folks with the ability to feed themselves and live a reasonable life in their golden years. why are millionaires collecting the same SS check that poor people are ? If you make over a certain amnt of money yearly or throughout your lifetime, then you should be ineligible to collect social security . It is ridiculous to me that we have millionaires out there cashing social security checks.
