When the bible was compiled, there was no scientific alternative so there was no need for it to withstand rigorous scrutiny. They had no idea that it would last for 2,000 years. It is a testament to the wisdom contained in the stories that it has lasted as long as it has and continues despite its obvious weaknesses.

That's the trouble with taking a line-in-the-sand, literalist, fundamentalist stance. You fall into the trap where you must defend every single line regardless of how stupid you sound, because you've defined anything less than total success as utter failure. However, many (most) christians do not take that stance and are perfectly comfortable, and don't have to take the hit from curmudgeons like us.
The other problem of course is you end up with the god of the gaps; and as the gaps get smaller, so does your god.
