Man Drowns as Police and Firefighters Watch

Alameda police, firefighters watch as man drowns, blame budget cuts for being unable to respond | abc7news.com

Quote:
" Well, if I was off duty I would know what I would do, but I think you're asking me my on-duty response and I would have to stay within our policies and procedures because that's what's required by our department to do," Alameda Fire Div. Chief Ricci Zombeck said when asked by ABC7 if he would enter the water to save a drowning child.

Alameda firefighters could not even go into the water to get the body, so they waited until a woman in her 20s volunteered to bring the body back to the beach.

"The frustration is certainly understandable and I think the sensibility would be probably that we're going to evaluate our response protocols," Zombeck said.

Alameda fire officials say they are going to have a serious discussion about why Alameda, as an island city, does not have the ability to save people in danger in the water. FUCKING RETARDS.
Policies and budgets are more important than a human beings life? The only "hero" here is the 20 year old woman, who, in other reports is said to have tried to save him but he was dead before she could get him back.

This.

Fuck cops in general, but can't blame them for this one IMO.

I know what you mean, but the fact is had this been a swimming victim or some shit they still wouldn't have gotten in the water.

By the book idiots, more concerned about themselves and their "hero job" than they are for the people they are supposed to be protecting. When one 20 year old woman does more than an entire group of firefighters and piggies, there's something seriously fucking wrong.

Not to mention how insanely stupid it is that they are on an island and they don't have water rescue training.

Yeah I've read about this elsewhere. First this dude wanted to kill himself so he is a danger to himself and others who get close. Second, he was in shoulder deep water. Any struggle could very possible result in any rescuers getting pulled down. Third, I think its kind of unfair to blame the officials. They didn't cut their own budget. They got to work with what they have.

Before the guy died, no spectators volunteered to help him because in my opinion, one of the main reason is the shoulder deep water and the person was suicidal.

We live in a country where lawsuits are common and sometimes I feel people like the officials are damned if they do and damned if they don't. Lets say they decided to violate policy and try to rescue the dude. And what if they failed (which was possible cause they didn't have the training). They'd probably get sued for botching a rescue attempt due to inadequate training and face the prospect of getting fired.

I'm more people would be outraged had this been a person died because they ended up in the water unintentionally and wanted to be saved. And if that was the scenario, I'd be willing to bet at least some of the firefighters would have gone in to rescue the person.

It'd be a lot more economical to build a bridge over a mass grave and invite everyone who want to take the plunge to do so freely.

Nah then it's open doing it in the ocean there's a better chance the tide will take them out and they'll become whale food.

Maybe we could fashion some kind of giant drawstring bag and once it's full up we can just dump it in New Jersey with the rest of America's dead bodies.

Nah not jersey. Our beaches are actually cleaner, and the water quality better than most of america's (especially cali). Plus cali has the great white population to dispose of them quicker.
