Over 3 years 280 of the Fortune 500 corporations paid less than half their 35% tax rate. 40 years ago the tax rate was 52% so you'd think they'd be happy to pay the bargain basement rate. 30 of them didn't pay any taxes at all. And republicans want to give them more tax cuts? It's no wonder why we have the income inequality of some third world countries.

While there are endless reasons not to vote for republicans, on this specific issue the democrats haven't really been a champion of the people either - especially when it comes to the financial industries.

I'm just wondering why (sorry not exact %) nearly 35% of Americans don't pay any federal income tax and 20% of them actually get refunds when they didn't pay any income tax at all regardless of their income.
I love a flat tax idea but what has been proposed is just garbage. Government at all levels needs to greatly reduce their spending

Over the last couple of decades the republicans have gotten farther and farther away from the basic idea of fiscal conservatism. At one time the Republican party was about lower taxes and less government involvement in people's lives. Hardly something you could flag as "evil". But with the effective takover by the religious fundamentalist looney lobby, the party has been polluted with all kinds of whacko fascist attitudes, while giving at best lip service to the original basic ideals.

I know there are a lot of conservatives out there who cringe at what the republicans stand for now. Maybe they should start another conservative party, with one of the basic tenets being "no religious overtones".

Reducing spending def isn't the answer. The Iraq and Afgan wars, def a waste of money. The emergency measures to stablize the economy and the stimulus...completely necessary. But could have been avoided if it wasn't for poor financial regulation. We need to raise tax rates, and redistribute wealth.

It's understandable if you feel disenfranchised but I wouldn't call it a joke. I think the joke is noone takes democracy seriously. So instead noone participates and we end up with the upperclass stealing all the country's income and gambling with our money.

I do believe that the Republicans are the worse of the two, but this is something that concerns me when it comes to election time.

1. Republican fucks things up
2. Democrat gets voted in
3. Idiot Americans expect everything to be solved immediately
4. Public approval of the president drops due to stupid people wanting magic man
5. Idiot Americans vote
6. Republican comes back in office

Not saying it's going to happen, but it's very possible.

Exactly, unfortunetly the more faith we lose in the system and just go "Oh well, nothing I can do" the more power they receive. The more we get pissed off and tell them "No", the more they actually have to react. I think the example of Bank of America revoking their new debit card fees is a great example of this, people said "fuck you, I'm taking my business elsewhere" and they had to revoke the fee. Meanwhile a bunch of other banks have still enacted new "fees", I know on Nov 11 I now get charged a $10 monthly fee for my Wells Fargo account, and the only way to waive it is to have some kind of loan or credit account with them (win/win for them).

If I didn't have a credit account with them, I would probably be switching to a local bank/credit union. Hell, I might do it anyways.
