Slice it any way you want. All theist religions are centred around one or more "higher powers" that set down rules through various means, for people to follow so they can please said higher power and theoretically have a better afterlife.

If you believe that a higher power (i.e. god, allah, etc.) created the universe, but don't believe in a specific organized religion, that makes you a creationist which is still a religious belief!

We may be talking semantics here but saying god and religion aren't the same thing is like saying a car and an engine aren't the same thing. You're right but it's an integral part of the larger item, and generally useless without it's framework.

Not really, some of the people in this very thread are pretty religious about their atheism. Then when it really goes to far it becomes fundamentalism, beyond that, fanatacism. None require God. The only ingredient we need to fuck shit up is ourselves.

I was mainly referring to the text that I quoted. He went from making remarks about Jesus to saying it reflected his belief in God. Too often I see people making comparisons between not believing in religion, and not believing in God. Jesus himself did not believe in an established religion. It becomes frustrating that people lose their belief in "God" because a series of people's practices seem arrogant to them. It just doesn't add up to me.

Using the word religious to describe "passionate" or "determined" does not make it actually religious. I'm a religious Toyota fan, or that's how my friends would describe me, but that's a metaphor or something.

Fundamentally, if you believe in any god, I think that makes you religious. Remember that the word "god" is a made up word. So to believe in the meaning of the word is to believe in the teachings of the people that started the religion. If that isn't true, where would your (not you in particular snowklinger) idea or image of god come from?

Now, if you are atheist, it doesn't mean you're non-religious. I'd argue that I'm mildly religious in so far as I have read several books by the current Dalai Lama and I try to use his teachings to handle daily situations in my life. There are some that suggest that Buddhism isn't a religion in the technical sense though.

So, passionate, determined, hard headed, can all be used to describe both believers and non-believers alike. But it is my interpretation that theist=religious.
