Default 60 minutes on Luxottica and Hauwei

I'm don't think this is the right section for this but I think it's better suited here than other sections because it deals with business and economics.

I was wondering if anyone caught this last night after the football games. It was a rather interesting 60 minutes last night starting with the basically monopoly Luxottica has over the glasses and eyewear industry. The section they talked about Luxottica's forceful take over of Oakley I found very interesting because Oakley has been one of my favorite brands for years and was an American brand until they were forced to sell. I thought they chose to sell until I watched this and realized that Oakley wanted lower prices in stores than Luxottica did so they threatened to kick them out of their stores unless they sold the brand to them. Now it doesn't seem like that big of a deal until you hear that they also own the top two glasses and sunglasses stores in America. This would have crushed Oakley into bankruptcy and if they have done it to Oakley I have no doubt they have done it to others. I find it hard to believe that a company can dominate a market on this scale. It's worse than the strangle hold even wal-mart has in the grocery market.

After that they also had a segment on Hauwei a found very interesting. A Chineese owned company that wants to rebuild the telecommunications infrastructure in America. The company may be further advanced in this field than American companies like Cisco, but allowing them to do so gives the Chineese government the opportunity to infiltrate out communications. Now Hauwei says they are a seperate entity from the Chineese government, but their country does not allow business seperation like we do in America. At any time the Chineese government could step in and take control over portuons of Hauwei's operations and easily spy on America. Add to that the fact that Hauwei's management and operation is very closed off and private to government and media curiosity about them really makes this a dangerous situation.

Any thoughts on this?

It's true about Luxottica. They own fucking everyone in the fashion sunglass world. They own Sunglass Hut, Oakley, Revo, Ray Ban, and Arnette. Plus, they make the sunglasses for pretty much every fashion designer that sticks his her her name on sunglasses. Burberry, DKNY, Calvin Klein, Polo, Chanel, and on and on.

If Luxottica owns it, I won't touch it.

They also own lens crafters, pearl vision, and any stores eyewear department owned by sears/K-mart. It's one thing to own stores or own brands. It's another to own both. They own or make the top brands and run the top stores in America. That means they set the prices and if you want in one of their stores you have to either let them buy you or let them produce your product. If you don't your business will probably fail unless you want in Wal-mart and that's not much better because they will ruin you as well trying to dictate your prices and everything, but atleast you get to keep your buisness. If this isn't a monopoly on a market I don't see what is.

This just sounds scary to me.
To make sure I'm reading this correctly it's saying Romney the "get tough on china" canadate founded a company that has been trying to get into bed with a Chineese company that creates a giant national security risks in America. Now he may not have had a big part in making this deal or pushing the subject but he is the founder and could have put his foot down on the subject saying NO. Now if he becomes president and pushes to allow hauwei to rebuild the american telecom infrastructure he stands to gain millions in perosonal wealth while hurting American telecom companies like Cisco and endangering our national security.

Does that sound like an accurate interpretation?

Both the Hauwei and Luxottica pieces were interesting for sure. I don't care as much about Luxottica dominating the market - the only time I'm not wearing glasses is when I'm excercising or sleeping and so I've always worn top-of-the-line specs. I'm not sure that they're a Lux model (I wear Silouettes) but the CEO of Lux said it right - eyeglasses are one of the ONLY products that are 100% functional and 100% aesthetic. Yes, the prices suck but I'm only buying a new pair of glasses every 7-8 years (that's been my routine so far). I can afford to drop several hundred knowing they're gonna last me almost a decade. Sunglasses...now thats a whole other story...

The Hauwei piece scares me. I'm not familiar with the telecommunications industry but a company that has shady dealings with the Chinese gov'ment trying to strangle the American market? No thanks. I'll take Cisco anyday, I don't care if HWs products are superior. I say keep them out.

I thought the most interesting bit of that 60 minutes was the Rodriguez feature. So cool. He also sounds almost EXACTLY like Dylan!

What I hate about Luxottica is that they snatch up brands that have built great names and reputations based largely on making a great product. As soon as they acquire them, here comes a bunch of cheap plasticy bullshit that looks like you bought it for $15 at the corner drugstore.

Ray Ban and Oakley still make some quality stuff, but stop into a Sunglass Hut and check out some of the models. Cheaply made bullshit but they still expect you to pay $150.

You don't care that luxottica is forcefully taking over American companies!? You also dont care that your overpaying for not only your glasses you buy periodically but also your sunglasses and goggles because they are all owned opperated and sold according to one company!? I'm sorry but that just soinds ignorant to me. Now they may be worn all the time and functional all the time but that doesn't mean they should be aloud to just take over companies or force them to have them made at their factories because they have such a monopoly on he market.
