Japan has never been a gun culture, as America has. Guns are rooted to our history, for good and bad.

Japan has one of the lowest gun homicides rates in the developed world and one of the most restrictive gun bans. Other countries have similar laws and rates. Countries without gun restrictions and bans (the US, Columbia, Brazil) seem to have much higher rates of gun violence.

ThunderChunky's blanket statement appears to fly in the face of logic and the facts. I merely ask him to please provide this "proof" that the 2 are not connected.

My question is not whether Americans would support a Japanese-style gun ban (which is another question entirely), but rather to provide the evidence the Japanese style gun ban does not work.

I'm ok with gun restrictions. I'd say lets get the ability to get weapons the same across all states and then let the states decide what is acceptable to restrict and not. But banning weapons is not going to solve the problem. Stop thinking it is. It has been proven. You say America's loose gun laws are to blame. They have been changed and nothing happened.There are a lot of phenomenons like this. America is a very obese country. It's not like we have looser food laws than the rest of the world. It's the culture. And culture can't, and shouldn't be regulated....well to me at least.

It was only a generation ago that Japan was one of the most aggressive and well armed countries in the world. Change is possible

I agree T.C. they did very little over the time they were active, that much has been shown. Mostly they made people a lot of money because they caused a severe supply/demand problem. Same with current auto weapons bans.

There really is very little that can be done to effectively control what exists now. Ramp it down in the future....maybe, but immediately, not so much. Its a feel good band-aide at best without long term support and an overall desire to change the wat people think about the issue. Amereica need to be "weened" off of a centuries old idea, I for one think that will never happen, its too deeply seeded in our psyche.

Yes, change is possible.....when change is WANTED, not forced. Forced change causes rebellion among those who do not choose it.

Japan has an entirely different culture and history than the U.S. does, they have many other factors at play, I cannot presume to know them all, and neither can/should you. What may have "worked" there is not guaranteed to work here.

Read through my post again. You know specifically the part where I answer your question. The part where I say how very different the American culture is. And I agree change is possible, but legislation can't, and shouldn't, dictate how we treat people. This is why gun laws won't and don't work in America to reduce crime. Is it gonna help the problem, yes a little. But VERY little and it's going to infringe on our rights. Which is why I am ok with a compromise between the two. Gun regulation across the board. States still regulate their own laws, but ground rules are set.
