Mr Medvedev said the EU-brokered peace deal was key to solving the conflict. Mr Medvedev said he did not want to damage relations with other countries but that Russia had to fulfil its peacekeeping mandate, and that it would respond in the same way to any future attack.

He also added that Poland's deal - signed on Thursday - with the US to base part of a new US missile defence system on Polish soil was aimed at the Russian federation.

At a news conference, the Russian army earlier said it had seized a large depot of American-made arms near Senaki.

The point is, that the disputed territories of Ossetia and Abkhazia were happily existing outside of Georgian control and yet Georgian military strayed in, to acquire control of them.

no one says anything.

Russia, who recognises many citizens and allies in these districts endeavours to clear out the invaders and then to push them away from the border areas, whilst ensuring no future counter attack is likely; hence their presence at a major Georgian garrison in Gori and the military port in Poti.

Russia IS obeying the ceasefire and no casualties have been reported since this agreement. but that is not to say it is criminal for them to ensure no future attacks once they too go back to 'their side of the fence'.

ramping up the rhetoric and suggesting that russia are only returning to their homeland, because US aircraft have arrived is utter bollocks and serves only to challenge the russians to impose their own sovereign right to protect and defend their own people and best interests.

I couldn't agree with you more Paolo. Georgia started this conflict and are now crying foul? Total bs. Anyone can look at the past and see that the response by Russia is not a surprise. In fact Georgia is lucky they have any government left. I wouldn't be surprised that Russia is looking for an apology from Georgia and for the Georgian government to admit they are at fault for this whole mess. Which unless I've missed something, they haven't. Either way Georgia wrote a check their ass can't cash. They are dumbshits for even starting this.

MPD - i am flattered that you should post with two images to effectively agree with the point i was originally making;

Georgia was duped into an offensive they were never to be supported with and thus able to sustain.... perhaps for the very same reason that on reflection, western efforts (not strictly limited to the USA) were so catestrophic for the middle east.
