Jay DEC 14th -15th

Went to Jay this weekend.

Extremely cold on Saturday. A bit of ice here and there closer to the top of the hill. Most of the hill had decent cover still a bit low in the trees.

On Sunday temps were much better, and they got hit with 15-20cm. Ropes were dropping all day and much of the glades were up for the taking.
I rode timbuktu glades and had a blast since they are furthest from the main lodge and almost nobody rode that part of the mountain.

Closer to the main hill and peak the wind was still blowing and ice was getting pretty bad, so we stayed lower on the mountain and in the trees.

Should be another good year at jay.

I even got busted chilling in the trees on what was apparently a closed run and after giving us a speech ski patrol told us to go down to the chairlift and stay in bounds.... ended up riding untracked pow the whole way down and was one of the best runs of the day.

To top it all off I bought a demo Burton Aftermath in almost new condition for 200$ at the end of the day.

I love riding pow!

They busted your balls about being on a closed run at JAY??? Jay always has a very liberal "if you can see it you can ski it policy." We hiked all the way up to the face chutes (mutliple times) a couple weeks back when the Tram side of the mountain was closed, patrol was stoked! (and coverage was FAR from ideal)

Ya trip me out a bit that they showed up right after we had finished blazing one.

Maybe they waited till we finished then showed up.... they just told us that they don't sweep the bushes and that they COULD make us walk back up. We just said that we had not went under any ropes (we didn't) and thought it was open, plus obviously if they are taking our passes im not walking back up f that im riding down one last time (did not actually say that, just went through my mind)

All in all a good day and I know they are simply doing their jobs.

Runs do get closed though. I have seem multiple runs with large closed signs on them. Usually it is because the runs have no coverage and are unsafe so usually only happens at the beginning and end of the season.

Generally Jay's Roped off Closed Signs read something like this "WARNING COVERAGE IS NOT AS GOOD AS YOU THINK"

We respectfully ducked ropes in front of patrol two weeks ago. We asked first and got the answer of "We're not the police, we don't have guns" :as they were smirking: Translation was - GO GET SOME!!!!

The only reason I could see them giving you an issue is if they thought you may become a liability to the mountain, or they would have to comb for your body in the dark.

(as far as coverage, when we hiked the shoots there were areas of jagged rock treachery, our lines were obvious, as it was all un tracked and we got nothing but "wooooooo hooooooooo's" ) they MAY have respected the fact we hiked the face.

I will say, If you are not familiar with the mountain you can get yourself into a hairy situ quick. Do you know which glades you were in?
