Default Trip Report & Board Damage (fixed): Lake Louise Sat Nov 24, 2012

Well folks, in one sentence. Saturday was in my top five snowboarding days EVER!!!! I have a quick Q about base repairs but I'll get to that later!

Headed early in the AM with a buddy from work. I'd never boarded with him before so I wasn't expecting him to keep up. WRONG. Turns out the mild mannered new guy that's a little on the stocky side can board his ass off!

We got to the hill at around 8:45 and the parking lot was already full. Ended up getting a decent spot on the road, not too long to walk. Headed up the quad chair at the bottom, then right to the Top of the World chair right away. Ran a line right under the chair for the first run, and the snow was fantastic. This line last year wasn't really runable until early Jan. Second run we went down the old lift line and found some deep fresh powder. I don't want to say this too loud but it was consistently good all day long in that section.

We then ventured into the back bowl, and found yet another nearly untouched stash near the Ptarmagin chair. We had to enter dense glades to find truly untouched powder but it was worth it.

To end the day we headed up the platter, but clouds rolled in and visibility was horrible. The plan was to head off the backside of the platter into the steep stuff but we had been hitting rocks all day and I wasn't in the mood to have no visibility and find myself in the middle of a rock field. So we headed down the front side off the platter, through some heavy moguls and then headed for glades that you had to go through a small rock field to access.

I got through the field okay and once inside we found some of the deepest powder I've ever been in... It was unreal. I think I'm just starting to come down off the high today it was that good!!!

The only negative side of the day was some of the hidden rocks. I ran over probably 10 rocks throughout the day and sustained more damage in one day than I've ever had before. See below for pics, but I'm debating between fixing myself with the PTEX candle, or bringing it in for a proper base weld and grind. The edges went from razor sharp to almost shot in one day, so I'm thinking the base grind and proper edge sharpening will go a long way... Thoughts? I also have a bad topsheet pressure crack from a rock that barely damaged the base. It was on the nose and it formed a 12" long or so set of cracks right down the board...

Now for the pics!

Bluebird + powder = good times!

The worst of the base damage...

The topsheet crack... I think this is just a burton thing, I've noticed the topsheet seems to crack/chip easily.

You would be fine with just doing some PTEX on that shot. It is fairly basic in terms of damage. No need for a base grind unless you really want one.

That cat gets into everything! Scared shitless of the vacuum but I'm wailing away on my board at the moment and he's right there checking things out!

Thanks! Yeah that's the front side of Lake Louise. So far I'm thrilled with living out here... The season is long, there's usually a powder dump every few weeks or so, and the resorts aren't too crowded. There's a million BC lines too but I'll save that for another year if/when I get bored with the resorts.

Okay so took out my trusty file and filed the edge down (it was raised a little). Gouged out any loose base, cleaned, ptex'd, scraped and now she's ready for wax. My work doesn't look pretty at all but it's smooth and it should stay in there!

lol I see where you went.... Trust me it was much worse on opening day weekend. I used 2/3rds of a toko candle after that day (my first self ptex service.)

After that experience I just did 2 front side runs on Saturday. Even though the condition were spectacular after the first 100 meters.

Yeah that's one of my favorite spots. There's that hip you can jump off right near the top of that "chair" and then dive in to those glades.

I'm starting to find spots that are consistently less abused than other spots on the hill. Usually it seems like they're just off the beaten path and the difference is amazing!

I'd love to take the cats riding with me like Killclimbz and his dog! Actually we just got that cat as a buddy for our other one. This one is a rescue and he's really well mannered. Only trouble is he's a climber. I've got club style speakers in my house and I caught him one day scaling the stack using the grills as a ladder!
