Powder in Queenstown NZ first week of August???

Hey,

I'm trying to plan a trip back to Queenstown NZ. Trying to decide if I should go with a few friends in late July or Early to mid August. Anyone know how the conditions are so far down in NZ? August still a good month to ride the mountains around Queenstown?

I would agree with you...but then we would both be wrong.

The start of the season looks like it will be great thanks to a couple of big dumps, one a week or two ago, and one over the last few days which is still going.

In the last couple of years I would've said August as the early season snow hasn't been great, although generally things are looking up by August. This season I think you should be fine whenever, it looks like it should be a great season from the get-go. Cardrona has had something like half its average annual snowfall already before its even opened! Just avoid going mid July during school holidays.

Kind of a lottery as to whether you get any decent pow days though. Fingers crossed.

Sweet. Thanks for the info! I think we are looking at mid-August.

From what I've heard-(If you believe forecasters)- June/july are meant to get the most snow with much of Aug to get the least for the season weeks of bluebird days etc......with some bigger dumps again in sept....eitherway going be some great base all through winter

Hey man,

My boss has frustratingly just announced that he is taking till mid Sept off , So that means my "July-Aug trip to Wanaka" has been renamed my "Sept-Oct trip to Wanaka"

Do you think Ill still get any powpow?
Or should I shorten the trip and sink the cash into Japan in feb?

Thanks in advance!

If you got powder in nz you would be lucky. If you didnt get it in japan you would be unlucky.

Here is a link to the snow graph of the remarkables: The Remarkables Snow Graph

There is one for coronet as well. Mid august is the best time to do NZ from my experience. I have had some pretty good Pow in NZ but mostly pretty average conditions. There was no comparison to the conditions when I went to Japan (Hakuba).

I would skip NZ and stay longer in Japan.
