I rented several different types then settled on the Burton Joystick (rocker). Best decision I could have made and have been completely satisfied.

But, the number one thing I would recommend is a good instructor...

Is the noise you hear a 'cracking' or more like a 'popping' sound? If popping you should get more than a x-ray, more like a MRI that could show a cartlidge tear or other problem.
