I hope I'm not pre-empting things but have I missed something or is the "What brand to buy?" section still to come? I'm not talking about a definitive answer, even brands to avoid would help.

I know it's probably the most difficult/subjective question to handle but I figure that unless there is something to at least guide people in the right direction then it will be the next thing that someone will ask and therefore it will result in more of the same questions. Possibly this could be handled through the review section, or a all-mountain/freeride/freestyle feedback post?

Yeah, at first I didn't want to TOUCH that one. But the more I think about it, the less difficult it seems to be. I'll try drafting something tomorrow and see what people think. I know this one is going to be contentious.

Thanks. What else do we need to cover? What about a socialism FAQ, too!?

Haha, I don't blame you. Everyone's experiences with, and ability to evaluate, products differs based on so many factors that it could be a pain. Opinions all the way from "I ride this board so it must be great" to "I've ridden every brand/model and based on my experience ..." however, there are a number of people that consistently speak up and put forward their picks based on solid experience, which is a good start.

I figure it's all about options, and in the end the buyer will have to make the final choice. What I was searching for when I started posting was enough knowledge to walk into a store and not be bullied in the direction a salesman wanted to take me.

PS. I promise nobody will hold you accountable ... unless it turns into a shit-fight-flame-fest, and then you're on your own.

Bingo. I was actually thinking about taking an approach of debunking rather than actual brand promotion. Examples: A company that is owned by snowboarders intrinsically makes a better boards than a company owned by a ski manufacture (K2 v. Never Summer, etc). Burton has the market cornered therefore their products are either the best or the worst. And so on...

Ideally, all I'd like to be able to do is give people a foundation that allows them to critically and mindfully do their own research. Moreover, they should have the knowledge to make their own conclusions, w/o buying into the rhetorical hype of fads and cult of personalities.

Yes, easier said than done...but I am dumb enough to give it a shot.

100% agree.

After a few recent posts I was thinking something like the below might be beneficial. Take a look ya'll and let the feedback start flowing! This would be placed AFTER the equipment FAQs, so assume the reader had just gone through all that material.

________

If you still have questions about, "What board* should I get?" follow the below steps BEFORE you post asking for advice.

(1) Browse through the various manufacturer's web sites. Look at the their decks. Based on your budget, and the type of riding you are are doing, select a few decks that are "contenders" for purchasing. Note: You can also do a very broad deck search on dogfunk.com (I am in no way affiliated with that web site).

(2) Search the internet, and this forum for reviews of your "contender" decks. This may answer your questions.

(3) If you STILL have questions at that point, THEN make a post asking them.

(4) DO NOT post something very general like, "I have been riding X years, weigh XYZ pounds, have size XY boots, and have a budget of $ABC, what board should I get?" While we are glad to help you, we are not here to DO your homework FOR you.

*The word "board" can also be interchanged with "boots" and "bindings."
The truth is out there.
You just need to use the "search" option.
