Bespectacled riders beware
I had an accident on my snowboard this summer and I want to share it. I think it has some value (other than comedy) to those of you who wear prescription glasses when snowboarding.
That day I was testing a board that is much shorter than my usual ride. Pretty late in the day, when the snow was very slushy, I kept gunning straight lines on the last 200m of the bumpy and steep slope. When you ask for it you usually get it so, eventually, my board's nose caught in the snow, swung me sideways onto my downhill edge, and I did a huge slam on my face. I shouldn't boast about being an idiot but it really must have been an awesome edge catch to see. I went from 60 to 0 in 0.1 seconds.
At the time, I was wearing a pair of prescription glasses and a pair of OTG sunglasses on top of them. Both were completely destroyed. Fortunately, the lenses in my prescription glasses were plastic and they stayed intact upon impact. Later, I thought how lucky it was to have plastic lenses because who knows what could have happened if they had been made of glass and they shattered and went into my eyes.
In summary, two points:
Try to avoid being an idiot (especially at my age when you start thinking about giving the kickers a rest so you can keep riding powder into a ripe old age). Wear plastic lenses on your prescriptions.
