Snowboarding in Austria in February. Rejoining piste after a bit of off-piste bashing. Deceptively high drop onto deceptively flat and hard piste - almost going up hill...
BANG! Knee exploded as I was trying to absorb the landing. ![]() Ski guide tells me to walk 200m up the hill to the lift; make it there after about 30min with lots of help from the people I was riding with. Leg can't bear any weight - have to use his ski poles as crutches. End up getting taken off the hill in the BANANA-OF-SHAME. Off to hospital... X-rays and CT scan confirm a fractured tibia and ruptured quadricep (left leg now three times the size of my right). Surgery puts a plate and some screw in. That was a season ender for me ![]() Still struggling 8 weeks later. Finally got rid of the crutches though... Anyway, just wanted to vent. Missed such a great season this year in Austria - had to cancel like five weekends away. I struggle with German so don't get much advice from the doctors and physiotherapists here. Watching snowboard vids from the couch at home doesn't help much. Here's hoping I will be good to go next season.. BTW anyone who has ever had plates and screws put into their leg - did you get them taken out or do you just leave them in? I can touch the thing through the skin and am worried if I bang it on the edge of the box or something it could cause a whole lot of other trouble... |
