I want to ride rails but....

I really want to ride rails but am concerned about the damage I will do to my board. I only have one board which was expensive and do not want to buy another. Just how much do rails damage a board? They look pretty smooth....

Rails themselves don't really damage the board too much.

User error, when trying to ride a rail, can result in a fucked up edge/board.

So do hookers but we all know how that ends.

I blew out an edge last year trying to hit a 270 to board slide on a kink rail and hit the kink with my edge. I have a park board that has raised edges and it helps with that but it still happens.

It is pretty rare for park riding to cause a board to be unrideable. Yeah, you may ding your edges and scratch the base when you mess up but I have 3 seasons on my curent board and nothing has made it ride any different. That said, when you are riding you do need to be mentally prepared that you could ruin your board. Of coarse that could also happen running over a ski pole on a groomer green.

Minor board damage is gonna happen. You could be super careful and stick to groomers and some asshole would smash your shit in the lift line. Just accept that it's gonna happen and ride to have fun.

THIS^

I've always taken care of my decks only to get it chipped in a lift line, or have someones rental skis rail me cause they "forgot" to slow down as they approach the lift scanner. I look up with a WTF expression and the nerd just giggled... so i ball up some snow/ice and pitch it in his face. He STFU real quick and was more conscious about others after that.

Accept the inevitable and go destroy something pristine

I just bought my board 2 months ago and it's already filled with PTEX and has dings all over the topsheet. Still rides like a champ.

If you ride often and hard you'll go through boards. Buy a craigslist board if you're really worried about it.

That's kinda like buying a sport bike and never taking it over 35MPH.
