Diet, alcohol, drugs, Cigs and Lifetstyle Changes...???
 
Anyone here give up alcohol, drugs, cigs or changed their diet because they know its BEST for them if they want to continue to snowboard at their best potential...???

I have always been an advocate of a healthy lifestyle...especially if your serious about being an athlete that loves what they do. I have never drank while snowboarding in my 5-6 seasons BUT...I do casually drink when I go out with friends to a party or club. I "barely" smoke pot and I am a casual/social cig smoker. I smoke when I drink or when I hang out with people that smoke.

I have always tried to eat WHOLE/REAL FOODS and stay away from processed foods as much as I can.

BUT...In the last 3-4 years or so. I have been PARTYING WAY TOO MUCH. Drinking and Smoking too much. I did not take care of my diet...and ULTIMATELY my riding and health SUFFERED because of it. I am looking to get back into being HEALTHY and motivated for snowboarding and making the right choices and lifestyle change.

Another Question:

If your obviously doing something (snowboarding or any sport for that matter) recreationally and not as a career or profession...Is it "ok" to indulge in life's guilty pleasures than...???

I guess it depends on how you were raised, your personality and your character that depends on what your choices are both on and off the snow.

I look at it more as personal development and how far do you want to take stuff. In the last year i have almost stopped cooking my food and eat a lot of raw veggies and fruits. I still go eat out with friend and don't watch much of what i eat when im out. As i gain more information i will continue to make small changes in my life. Its not just about the short term but all the long term negative effects of a poor diet. Cancer, diabetes, heart disease, ect are mostly due to diet.

Some basic things to start with would be cutting out most of the refined sugar that you eat will help you heal faster because it will help reduce swelling. Most grains metabolize into sugar so its good to stay away from them as well. Beyond that start to educate yourself and figure out where you can start to make great choices and then continue to make small changes. I find that a rapid change is hard to stick with. Good luck!

Gave up smoking (cigs). Smoked since I was 16 and it's not something to be proud of at all. Still do the recreational smoking ;)

But I'd never be able to give up alcohol (We are allowed to drink beer from the age of 16 and short drinks at the age of 18), not that I'm an alcoholic or any kind. But I just can't see myself never having a glass of champagne at receptions or a beer at a party/BBQ/Friends house. And it might sound stupid from someone that's only 18, but I once went to party by car (so strictly no drinking) and I thought it was lame as hell. I don't go black out on alcohol, but I can enjoy a couple beers to get in the mood. :laugh:

Snowboarding is a guilty pleasure. Its one thing to get in shape to enjoy it more but if you live your life dedicated to disciplining yourself for it, eventually it will let you down. The decision to live a healthy life is one that should be made only because you know the outcome will benefit "every" aspect of your life, not just snowboarding. If your not competitive, why do it for snowboarding only.

I eat healthy (fresh cooked mostly organic food, only local organic meat - not so much cos it's healthier but cos I want the animal to have had a good life), but am long time cig smoker and drink my beer in the evenings as well. I do a lot of sports (daily) but as well as sports are part of my life, cigs n beer are. If I had to give up the latter ones for the first ones, my personal ying-yang (lets call it pleasure vs performance) would be in bad imbalance... (I'll possibly might begin to think about to maybe quit smoking the day I won't be able to sustain a xc course.) Anyway.

It's a matter of priorities. If performance is your priority, you will sacrifice the "pleasure" (partying). If you're not willing to sacrifice "pleasure", then performance is not your priority. Easy as that :) Be honest to yourself, make decisions accordingly and then be committed to them. No need for feeling of guilty then.

Giving up smoking was the best thing that I have ever done in my entire life as far as health is concerned.

Take small steps and conquer one hurdle at a time.

When decided to quit smoking, sometimes when I drank I would have a cig or two. Then I started weaning off that too and soon I was drinking and not smoking. (Smoking and drinking go hand in hand)

Changing my diet to trim up yes....., and should help my cycling also.

I'll not going full vegan... I do enjoy a nice dry-aged Prime ribeye or porterhouse here and there.....
