Is 12" of snow enough for 'epic conditions'?

So I've been going to Bear Mountain and Mt High this year, and so far the hype just isn't there.... its slushy and wet by noon and 90% man-made snow, almost 0 off-trail 'tree-runs' to speak of because they are all bare land with no snow.

But now I just saw that Mammoth just got 12" of snow yesterday and opened nearly the entire mountain. Is this enough to qualify for those epic conditions of all-day sessions and is it enough coverage to hit some off-trail tree runs? I only want to make the 5+ hr drive to Mammoth if these are the epic days I've been waiting for... but I want to save my time/money if its just going to be more of the same garbage conditions I described above.

12 inches on top of a solid base is great pow riding but 12 inches on top of dirt is rock and tree stump base. Do the math.

This. A foot of snow at Mammoth on top of the garbage conditions they've had lately isn't going to be "epic" at all.

Mammoth is epic when this statue:

Epic for this year unfortunately.

My core shot says non epic. But if you have a season pass, no telling when or if conditions will get better.

We had an "epic" storm with a 6" dump last month :yahoo:

I got my very 1st powder session and had a blast. I'm also in the upper Midwest and these last 5 years have been 10x worse than what the West Coast is seeing this year.

So, everything in perspective is the best way to call it

Epic is partly a state of mind, the mental attitude you go into it with, and how your body feels on that particular day
for me 12in is plenty for and epic day, to me 12 is in the zone of ideal actually. no doubt waist deep pow is insane and sure to be epic, but at some point you meet the law of diminishing returns

the biggest factor down there will probably be the Crowd, as thirsty as you guys are for snow i'm sure 10,000 people are going to go apeshit and destroy that 12" by lunchtime

Mammoth is trying to get any $$$ they can get by claiming "epic" conditions. City declared bankruptcy a few years back and prices of lift tickets have insanely increased more than any resort I've seen. If you have a season pass, then go, but shelling out over $100 to ride on 12" of hidden rocks, I'll pass. Not to mention the (*$(*$(ing wind. Used to drive to Mammoth from San Diego, now prefer to fly to Tahoe area.....

nope. we're going to see serious drought issues on the entire west coast this year from the lack of snowpack here. it doesn't just effect the mountain here, it effects pretty much everything.

We have been getting that almost daily the last week here in Norway, the problem is, that now we are forecast rain from next week...!!!

It sucks, but i have had 10 good days of powder and will be there the next 4 as well to make sure, i get some more...

Just have fingers crossed the forecast changes now...!!!
