Did anyone not see this coming? I honestly think it's the right move for him. Superpipe is by far the best known event in snowboarding by the casual viewer and SW is probably the only rider most of them can name. His name and brand are based off of dominating that event. There's little for him to gain by competing in slopestyle. He wouldn't be the favorite and there's a very good chance he wouldn't win gold. SW dropping out of slopestyle is hardly a story, but it would be a story if he didn't medal.

Read the Sochi thread. There are pages of posts about this already.

isnt slopestyle the first event? considering that the fave for the event is mcmorris, i can understand dropping out to avoid risking injury for the pipe

horgmo is out, white is out, its basically the battle of the canadians now

It's the first event, it's a chance to put your mark on history. Of course has plenty to gain. But not when 3 riders have been injured and almost all of them have complained that the course is overbuilt.

It's the Olympics, and SW is there because he wants to win gold. I think it's the right move for him to focus only on the super pipe if he doesn't feel that he can win the Slopestyle. Making the decision at the last minute isn't really that much of a dick move, but I think hogging that slopestyle spot in the first place is probably somewhat of a dick move?

What's his chance of winning? I'd say slim to none. There's a lot more for him to lose because in all likelihood, he wouldn't win anyway.

IMO, if SW was wavering on his commitment to compete in this event, the US team should've brought along an alternate.
