Would you pay more for stuff made here? - Snowboarding Forum

More and more of the stuff we buy in our sport is being made in China. Personally, I think that the older stuff I had that was made in North America or Europe was of much much better quality. Would you be willing to pay more for stuff made in North America or Europe, and if so how much more?

To be honest, I never bother to check where my gears are made. I will buy as long as the price is right.

I am willing to pay more for stuff made in the US. If it's quality product. My Neversummer Summit Splitboard was $1400. Not cheap at all, but it's been worth every penny. Not that I want to drop $1400 on a solid board.

Not that made in China is such a horrible thing. K2 has a factory there and they have been turning out fantastic boards the last couple of years.

If I can find what I am looking for locally and typically by smaller companies I'll buy it.

I think Chinese goods may be getting better, but the failure rate has been too high. Not just in snowboarding gear, but electronics, toys etc. I used to like 32 boots, but ever since they started coming from China, frankly, they have really sucked.

I'm on my 3rd chinese made DVD player in 2 years, the previous one made in Malaysia lasted 5 years.

As far as boards, I have 2 made in the USA and 1 made in Canada. I'm willing to buy European goods, because they buy a lot of North American made ski/snowboard goods, and come here for vacations to ride our relatively uncrowded terrain and spend money. So there is enough reciprocal I think.

I would just like to see more stuff made here.

Same here, I would rather spend a tad more - but only a tad. I'm a student so I don't have much leeway with cash.

I am happy my Rome was made in Austria

Nothing is made in America anymore. Even stuff that says made in America is usually just assembled here. Globalization is not going anywhere. I would gladly pay more for something made in America, but only if the company kept everything here and I don't see that happening.

There are a couple guys who hand-make snowboards in N.A. that cost about the same as a higher-end board in any of the mass-produced companies (see for example here or here). I hear that what you get is a fantastic product, as you're literally in correspondence with the dude making your board. I'm thinking of picking up something like this for next season, what do you guys think about something like this in terms of buying in the country?
