Alpine Carving On the Rise?

Is it just me or is it on the rise in Utah and Colorado? Mostly hardbooters, but I do see some softbooters with forward stances doing it.

I enjoy watching them. But occasionally when I hit their trenches just so, at speed, it feels like hitting a pothole in my car .

Haha, that reminded me on the times when I was a noob and hated to ride behind my buddies which "destroyed" the groomers ahead, crisscrossing deep trenches, challenging obstacles for me that time; like crossing tram tracks with racing bicycle tires

I've been riding (or trying to ride) this way for about 20 years... soft boots and forward stance. I did have an alpine setup many years ago (Nidecker Predator) but had to sell it 'cuz I couldn't afford hard boots. I rode it only a few times with borrowed ski boots with the buckles very loose- not a good setup). I try to ride the same setup on steeps and powder and it seems to work for me. I can't lay it down like some people, but I have fun with it.

an additional thought: I try to avoid "hockey stops" to theoretically keep wear on my edges down, so if there is room at the bottom of the run near the lift line, I try to carve uphill to scrub off speed smoothly, most times I can almost do a complete circle and there is no sliding at all. I used to ride with a GPS just for kicks so I could look at my speed to get an idea of it. I crashed at about 50 MPH once and it felt like driving a car down the freeway- only without the car.... kind of scary. That stuff sort of goes along with this style of riding

Have you ever done an complete circle? It's an yet unachieved aim for me. Only get about 320 till I loose all uphill speed

Sort of: I come into the base area (relatively flat with no one in the way, of course) with a lot of speed and do a hard toeside, as I make it around and start going uphill, speed is scrubbed off rapidly and I could fall over due to loosing the Centrifugal force that allows me to lean way over without falling. At some point coming around I need to predict the "sweet spot" and swing the nose of the board out of the trench closer to the center of the circle and stand up at the same time (thus converting from a carve to just sliding on a flat base, with 99% of speed scrubbed off). If everything goes well, I have done almost 360 degrees by the time I come out on the flat base and am now going very slow.

Up at blue mountain Ontario the Toronto ski club runs a snowboard racing program and you see quite a few kids/youths with carving setups; the younger ones sometimes run softboot on carving board and the older ones have the full rig.
