Hi, I am a web developer who wants to know if building a social networking site only for snowboarders is worth doing.

I am new to snowboarding but I love it! During my research about snowboarding, I did not find any sites that contained organic snowboarding videos, suggestions, etc. So my idea is to create a website that is somewhat similar to facebook or myspace but only for snowboarders. Snowboarders for all over the world can join and start sharing their experiences with other snowboarders instantly.

It sounds like a decent idea but I don't see it taking off unless you do a really good job.
We already have crackbook and we already have snowboardingforum.com.
Make something better and the people will come.

You gotta give them an experience that making a group in facebook or myspace wouldn't give them. Think about it from a business-minded standpoint, not a web dev standpoint.

I don't think I'd really be interested unless it did something very unique. This website is all the snowboarding chat I need. And social networking sites are a dime a dozen.

I definitely would not be interested in a site intended to make money. It would have to be done by someone who absolutely LOVES snowboarding and not by some computer nerd who thinks he can make a cool million with yet another MySpace clone.

I think my idea here is to be unique and actually care about the members more than the revenue it is going to make. I've skateboarded most of my life and snowboarding takes it to a new level which I really enjoy spiritually and physically.

I just think we need a medium where snowboaders from all over can share images, videos, thoughts about their passion.

Yes, social networking sites are dime a dozen but they are all generic, not themed for snowboarding and do not have relevant content. I worked for myspace for 5 years so I know this landscape pretty well.

If you are wondering why I want to develop this, is because I did not find any real snowboarding content on the web that a first timer or anyone interested in snowboarding or learning snowboarding is looking for. If you build a networking system that allows pros, amateurs, instructors to share their experience, then you have something unique.

Also, I don't want it to be a ad driven site, I just want to be able to make enough to pay for the dedicated servder and admin service that it would need 24/7, not to mention legal stuff.

Because the site will be SEO for snowboarding and will attract more snowboarders than any other site. Not to mention the site will have a snowboarding look and feel.
