i did it once at camp gaw hill in new jersey, the lift operator was making out with his girlfriend and didnt even notice, ill never do it again though as another couple kids who did it at camp gaw the next year when i was there got arrested for jumping off the lift. and it was really really easy, lift the bar drop like 8 feet to the snow, bind in and ride down like normal, gave me a huge adrenaline rush too, lol. good times

ah ok makes more sense now. Yeah I've seen kids bouncing on chair lifts like they're at mc donalds and I've always wondered if theres any consequence to that...Now I know.

Usually there is a safety that prevents the cable from falling off the tower, but this will fuck the entire lift and will require some serious effort to re rail it. You will strand everyone on the lift if it derails. This is the same reason you are not supposed to bounce or swing the chair.
Hmmm...I didn't realize this could happen. I always see the rollers covered with a metal sheath (<-for lack of a better description) which I though would prevent the cable from ever derailing.

They are designed to do that, but you are talking about a lot of mass. It's not foolproof and some of the older fixed grip lifts may not have these protections. Overall, jumping off of a lift is a stupid thing to do. I can think of about 999,999,999,9999 things I would find more fun at the resort, than jumping off of a lift because it seems "cool"...

YES, U KNOW CAMP GAW TOO!!! ITS THE SMALLEST HILL IN THE WORLD and and the ski patrol adn staff sucks so bad. they pay no attention to anything. only good thing about camp gaw is its got a terrain park and is close to my house. So if you've been to camp gaw, u know the doubles lift that doesnt stop at the midstation and is in the center of the hill. at the top of that one me and my friend jumped off.
