I agree with Grizz. There is too high of a risk of derailing the chair to warrant jumping of it. There are some sweet spots off a chair at Seymour to drop off and it's crossed my mind a few times but it's not worth risking the lives of the people on the chair.

Thirded. Even if it doesn't detach the chair, it's going to send everyone whirling around. Secondly you'll be falling at a weird, awkward angle and much more likely to hurt yourself than you would dropping off a cliff.
Finally, when you drop of a cliff, people are impressed. When you drop off a chair, people just think you're a dick. |

I've done it only after getting the OK from the lifty. I was living in Steamboat and the park chair got stopped because of some idiot father and son crash and I was yelling to the lifty if it was cool if I could jump he said go for it since I had been sitting there for around 20 minutes already and I had to go to work. I did it at Breck before to, same situation.
As mentioned though no reason to do it, it's a bad idea find a cliff.

Sure, i've thought about dozens of times, especially when i'm on those slower chairs. But honestly don't do it, it's pointless and a dick move. Just ride up the lift and then do something gnar on the way down instead.

I've seen someone jump up and grab the bottom of the lift, get carried like 20 feet up the mountain then let go so he could re-do a quick little pow line.
How come you can derail the lift if you drop off? |
